Guest guest
Hi Chrissy, More on creon! I have only twice forgotten to take my normal Creon supplies out with me. Once we had gone out for lunch when I realised what I'd done. I ran out of the restaurant and went to find a healthfood store. I bought the digestive enzymes which they sell.....not the same type, strength, proportions etc. as the prescribed ones. I ate very little though and nothing bad happened. The other occasion is something which I don't think I mentioned before. (If I did, sorry for the repetition! Senior moment again, perhaps!)When I was in London at New Year I went to a particular store and, after hours shopping on Oxford St, I was tired, hungry and thirsty. I went to the store's coffee shop. At the time I had just been told I was coeliac after all, as well as having CP....the " double whammie " !! I could find not one thing gluten- free. I asked the pleasant waitress if I could eat the fruit and gluten-free biscuits I had in my bag as they had nothing suitable for me. She became quite excited and said that the very best cake they had was gluten-free but she would have to go down to the main restaurant to get it!! i just couldn't stop her! She came back with a HUGE wedge of delicious-looking cake covered in a thick layer of chocolate and nuts. She read out the ingredients to assure me that the cake was gluten-free. It WAS......BUT the main ingredients were butter, cream and chocolate!!!! She was so enthusiastic for me and so pleased with herself that I had a moment of utter madness and ate the cake. Now you would have to know me to appreciate just how out-of-character this is. I NEVER break medical diets. I can't explain my action. (BTW, it was the best thing I've eaten in YEARS!!!!!) To make matters worse, I only had 2 Creon 40000 with me. I then became very upset because we were all going to the theatre in the evening and I thought that I would be sitting there in terrible pain while everyone else enjoyed themselves. I just couldn't understand how I could have done something so stupid, initially just so as not to disappoint the helpful waitress and then tempted by the wicked deliciousness of the cake! Well....I did have pain....but no more than I often have anyway! I ate nothing else all day until after the show so I suppose that helped. Anyway, I haven't repeated the experiment!!! To answer your question properly, Chrissy, I can't really say what would happen because I have never had a normal full meal without taking my Creon.....at least, not since it was prescribed in April 2003. Before that I certainly had a lot more severe pain. However, I do think it takes time for the body to adjust to the medication so maybe it takes time before ill-effects would kick in if one didn't take it. I can't really explain that one but my initial abdominal cramps over a few weeks when I first started Creon and my adventure with the cake both possibly support this idea. It's probably not very scientific! BTW, please remember us on Tuesday when Jim will get the full picture on his cancer from his consultant. I'll be going with him. Good luck with it. With love, Fliss (UK)
