Guest guest
I just wanted to let folks know about the progress is making---finally, after 5 months, and also to encourage those who have begun or not seen much progress. I began 's SCD last spring. Since he wasn't having diarrhea, I just jumped into the diet and began to give him foods on the list, but without following the progression. First, to let you know: is 18 yo and diagnosed with severe, low-functioning, non-verbal autism. One problem we have struggled with for years is drooling. We have done a lot over the years, including, of course, a number of diets--Sara's, gluten-, casein-, soy-, sugar-, yeast-free, Feingold. Although they all seemed to help somewhat, the drooling did not decrease and even increased. Well, last spring with the SCD, his drooling increased. Then I heard about the low-oxalate diet, and knowing the greens we were used to in our diet, were high in oxalates and also observing that had for some years seemed to have pain on urinating, I leaped into the LOD. The LOD was hard to implement. We continued to struggle and finally I just gave up. However, this past fall, having read Drs. Pangborn and Baker’s DAN! book, and the glowing report Dr. Baker gave SCD, I decided to try again and this time, I got on pecanbread and began to use the progression recommended. We were still struggling. Finally after almost 3 months, I sought help from the list and Mimi suggested I remove carrots. That was part of the puzzle. had his first normal BM, however, after that it was a continuing struggle. We were using cheese and the 24 hr. goat yogurt. Finally, I got on the list once again, and read, CAREFULLY, all the recommendations. The website recommended no cheese or milk product for 2 weeks after beginning the diet to give the bowel a chance to heal. So, I stopped the cheese and yogurt for 2 weeks and he began to have normal BMs, but when I relented and gave him some cheese (just a little!) we were back to square one AGAIN!! This week, I began him back on Boulardii to treat the yeast that we have been having trouble with for about a month now. And today, I started him back on enzymes. I did give him MgSO4 (Epsom salts) one tablespoon orally today, but he had a normal BM and not loose. I believe that it is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to 1) read all instructions on the website (and follow them); 2) follow the progression, including no milk products for at least 2 weeks. I encourage all newbies to READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AND FOLLOW THEM. Carfagno, mom to , SCD 5 months. --------------------------------- Looking for earth-friendly autos?
