Dear all, my baby girl Bella was found of plagio and brach from her 2 months old. We continously used the repositional stratagy to try to correct it and it do looks better right now. However, I still think its quite severe, since there still be a big spot of flat and we can see the facial asymmestry from mirror.

We mentioned that from her 3 months old and her ped never think about it seriously. He always told us her head will round out itself gradually. We also got a free evaluation from hanger but they also do not suggest helmet treatment. Unfotunataly, we do not have a docband closeby.

I put she sleep on her tummy from her 5.5 month old and hope it will help. But now she just roll over all around the crib. I don't know what I can do except waitting for the time.

Could you please give me some suggestions about that and tell me is the ped tell us the truth or not? Thanks a lot!

By the way, the pictures are named by the date which I capture them.

I am sorry you are having a difficult time. I have some questions.

When did Hanger do the free evaluation? Was it recently or a long time ago?

Do you know what Bella's measurements were?

Do you have any pictures of her face that we can see?

I do see from the pictures you posted that she looks like she has some

plagiocephaly. I wonder if it has gotten worse since your evaluation with Hanger

because I am surprised that they did not suggest a helmet.

Some other people on this board have tried CST. I do not know a lot about it,

but I am sure someone else can tell you about it.

Dear billiel, thank you very much for your reply.

FYI: We got the Hanger free evaluation around 03-10-10, almost 20 days before the first photo I attached. They didn't give us the detailed measurement results, the only things I know is the most plagio is 10mm in that time. Then the hanger guy told us he do not think Bella need band treatment, instead of encouragement of more tummy time.

At 03-30-10, we went to another plastic surgury specialist which we made appointment by ourselves. (Our pedatricition don't want to refer her and alway tell us her head will round out by itself.) The specialist just took a look of her head without any measurment then take the conclustiion that he don't think she need treatment too. He told us just go for more tummy time.

I don't think her head getting worse after we got the hanger free evaluation. I also wondered why they didn't suggest that since 10mm alreay be moderate accoding to the docband company. :-(

I know nothing about CST, Thank you for mention that. Maybe I shoud do some research for that too.

Attached are some other pictures which I captured also in this month. I don't know if you can notice some prodominant of her right side of face than left.

Thank you very much!

Dear billiel, Thanks a lot for your informations.

Actually, I alway hope to put her into a helmet since her 4month old.(As I

mentioned above, we begun reposition from her 2 months old, we did see

improvement at begining, but not much after her 4month.)Unfortunately, our

pediatrition alway insist his opinion and don't want refer us, the plastic

surgury guy also don't want prescript for Bella, even we waitted 1 month for his

appointment.

I do find a location near us by your Starband link, do you know if they can

accept evaluation without a prescription? Or do you think we should switch to

another pediatrion right now? since Bella already almost turn to 7 months.

By the way, how old your baby boy now? Do you just begain to put him to a band?

Hope he'll be fine soon:-) We was at yale university too untill last summer,

Unfortunatly we moved out and cannot pursue your son's neurosurgeon too.

My son is 9 months old. He is just starting and gets his DOC Band on

Wednesday. I am excited to be getting the treatment started because I also had a

hard time getting a doctor to help us. The first neurosurgeon I saw said that

plagiocephaly almost always goes away on it's own in a few months, which is not

true. He didn't even tell us there is a treatment available.

I would call the STARband location and ask them if they do free evaluations, and

if Bella can be evaluated without a prescription. I went through Cranial Tech,

so I am not sure. I'm sure other people on the board can tell you more about the

STARband evaluations. If they will see you for a free evaluation, maybe the

STARband location can also help you find a pediatrician who will write you a

prescription.

If that doesn't work, you could also go back to the pediatrician in a month or

two and tell him/her that the repositioning is not helping and that the Hanger

evaluation said Bella has moderate plagiocephaly with a measurement of 10 mm

asymmetry. Maybe if you keep asking, you will eventually get a prescription once

they see it is not improving.

Can anyone on the board tell Liu Ting if STARband locations do free evaluations?

Do you need a referral/prescription first?

The STARband location we went to (CIRS Oakland) charged $150 for an

evaluation but the fee was put towards the cost of the band when we

got it. I believe they will do the evaluation without a prescription

but you do need a prescriptionto get the band.

If you get the evaluation and it shows enough plagio to justify a band

you can go back to your ped to ask for a prescription. I have heard of

docs changing their minds once the evaluation and pictures are in

front of them.

Dear , thanks for your information. Actually, I forgot to ask them if it's free or not. I have another question is, what you said you did not need a prescription is just for the evaluation or also the band?

Dear Molly, by the way, could you please provide me some suggestions of how to convince my ped? Since you talk about go back to ask for a prescription. He seems really do not surpport the helmet treatment. What he told us is the baby's head will round out by itself no matter with or without the helmet, he even promise us it will take the same time in each conditions. Is it true or not?

And another question is, is them use the scannner to do evaluation or just by hand? I went to hanger before for a free one and they just did it by hand.

If the facility has a STARscanner then yes, they will use that

for the evaluation.  The following site lists all the STARscanner locations:

http://www.orthomerica.com/technology/scan_locations.htm

There are orthos, both STARband and Hanger providers, that don’t

have the scanning systems and they will take the measurements by hand.

Dear Molly, by the way, could you please provide me

some suggestions of how to convince my ped? Since you talk about go back to ask

for a prescription. He seems really do not surpport the helmet treatment. What

he told us is the baby's head will round out by itself no matter with or

without the helmet, he even promise us it will take the same time in each

conditions. Is it true or not?

And another question is, is them use the scannner to do

evaluation or just by hand? I went to hanger before for a free one and

they just did it by hand.

Best, Ting

The STARband location we went to (CIRS Oakland) charged $150 for an

evaluation but the fee was put towards the cost of the band when we

got it. I believe they will do the evaluation without a prescription

but you do need a prescriptionto get the band.

If you get the evaluation and it shows enough plagio to justify a band

you can go back to your ped to ask for a prescription. I have heard of

docs changing their minds once the evaluation and pictures are in

front of them.

Unfortunately, all of the band providers require prescriptions. From what I can gather from my readings, this didn't use to be the case until the FDA got involved.. Then the companies had to get FDA approved. The ones that couldn't or didn't get approval went out of business. Apparantly, it was also this approval that caused the price of the bands to go up so much.

So, of course, the FDA wants the band companies to get prescriptions. So, FDA involvement changed things. So, while making it harder to get a band, they also (hopefully) increased the requirements for the marketing of bands and hopefully the effectiveness of the actual band itself. Of course, everyone knows that the FDA isn't perfect and they can only regulate what is told to them.

On a side note (mostly to others), you can report a bad experience with a band to the FDA. I discovered this when I was searching for the original approval documents to investigate my doctor's claims that the FDA had only approved bands up until 18 months (she was right). Then, the FDA will follow up and investigate the "incident". If they find problems, then require the company to take corrective action. If you are curious about this, do a search under FDA for cranial bands. You'll find some of the complaints and even the warning letters that were written by the FDA to certain companies. However, I think that many people don't know about this and people may have other reasons to not report problems. So I'm sure that just because there have been no complaints, that isn't a guarantee that all is well with a company. I'm just posting this because I have read of a few different bad experiences here and I thought that some of those people might want to consider whether they should follow through with this.

Anyway, you will need to convince a medical doctor before you can go forward.
