Blood clots are a risk for any surgery. As well as you can get a deep vein

thrombosis (DVT) that is a blood clot in the leg and it can travel up to the

lung (pulmonary embolus - PE) and you don't even have to have surgery. With a

DVT you will develop pain in the leg and with a PE you will have difficulty

breathing and shortness of breath. Heparin IV drip and coumadin by mouth is the

treatment for both.

How did the blood clots get there and is this normal for this surgery or is

the risk there for any surgery?
