Guest guest
Despite my love of Oz, I would not rush it; heat is hell on us with cf; you might be better off where you are. Where ARE you in Canada--when I was a kid we lived in Ontario, CA for a while, near Hamilton. Love and best wishes, n Rojas, wcf, mom of 3 very ADULT adults, youngest of whom has cf also. . . Hey Australians!! Hi there, my hubby and I are both qualified teachers here in Canada. We are definitely sick of the snow and every winter , our son with CF, gets sick. My question is this, what is your medical coverage like in Australia? We are very fortunate here in Canada, unlike other countries. We are discussing the idea of moving somewhere warmer and of course we have always wanted to see Australia. I am not even sure if it's possible to move there, me or my hubby would have to have a teaching job there, I would assume, before we moved. Any comments would be appreciated. Guest guest
We are about 1 hour from Hamilton, just north of Toronto in a town called Aurora. The heat is that bad eh? Geez, is there any " ultimate " location to live in when you have CF? Cheryl Re: Hey Australians!! Guest guest
Cheryl, I am biased, I think we live in heaven. We love the hot weather (remind me I said that when I complain). I should say we hate cold weather. Depends were you go. We are from South Australia. It is very hot but a dry heat. Up North is a humid heat which kills us, were not used to it and hate it. We don't pay for any hsp. admissions and $3.80 per script item for cf kids, unless it isn't on the government benefit scheme. But everything we have had has always been $3.80. The only other thing is I remember oh about 4-5 years ago a Dr. from U.K. was offered a job here, in our state actually. It was front page news that he had to turn it down because they wouldn't let him emigrate because his daughter had Cf. and it would be a financial drain on the Government. I cant remember what sort of Dr. he was but it did say he could treat his own daughter, but still a no go. Just check all that out first for whichever country you decide on. Guest guest
Hi I am a teacher too. We're from Brisbane, Queensland which is further north than Sydney and Melbourne and yes it can be very hot here but most of the time the weather is pretty good. It definitely gets alot hotter / humid the further north you go. Lots of people have airconditioning anyway. The sunshine coast is really nice and not so hot, Toowoomba is cooler as well being up the mountain but it doesn't snow but there are heaps of different climates in Australia - it's not all really hot - I don't think it is all that different to Canada. There are quite a lot of Canadian teachers working here - but it can be difficult to get a permanent job unless you are willing to go country but there is always plenty of relief work and contracts. I've met a few C. teachers on exchange I suppose you could try that to see what you thought first. I don't think the school system is too bad compared to other countries and I think that our philosophies are fairly similar - I know we studied Canada's inclusive education policies - I work in special education. But you know teaching is teaching. The hospital system really covers most of our expenses and the care seems pretty good. I don't really know about the immigration laws and CF etc. though. If you have any questions I would be happy to chat. Guest guest
Thanks Fiona, I am not sure if we are going to be able to move anywhere. Having a child with CF may be our biggest problem. Other countries might not want to let us in because we will be an expense on the system. I guess the best way to find out is to speak to immigration directly. We are going to a teacher-job convention next month. Hopefully someone from Australia will be there. Thanks for your info.
