Guest guest
I was told by a few GI's that if the person was having a pancreatitis attack, it wasn't safe to have an ERCP whilst the pancreas is inflamed. Subsequently, when I was in hospital for an attack and needed stenting, the doc ordered haldol & ativan by IV to control my severe nausea and the ativan to relax my pancreas. It must have worked because I don't remember much after getting the first doses of those, and lost 2 days of when I was in hospital, but the day after getting those medications, I had a stent placed, so it must have settled the pancreas down enough. I had to go to MD for an opinion on my tumours last year and of course had a pancreatitis attack whilst I was there. They admitted me straight away, and had me ready for an ERCP not long after. I asked the question " don't you need to wait because it is unsafe to perform a procedure on the pancreas when it is having an attack? " and they told me that they deal with dangerous and complicated situations there all the time, and with patients who have pancreatic cancer, this is a common thing for the doctors. I wonder if this could be what the doctors meant but didn't get across in laymans terms..
