Guest guest
I don't know if these suggestions will help at all, but my 2 year old son has been eating popscicles like crazy. We currently have two varieties. The first is very tasty and I can't keep my 4 year old out of them. It consists of pureed butternut squash, pears, and a bit of coconut milk. We also made them with peaches which was really good too and once I even included a wee bit of zucchini. I know squash popscicles don't sound all that delicious, but the combination is really quite good. The second variety I just introduced today and they are not quite so high on the delicious scale, but still, surprisingly good. My 4 year old ate one and asked for another It is Knudsen's grape juice diluted with 50% water, and, are you ready for this? Pureed green beans and zucchini. LOL. I know, but he's eating them like crazy and he has had 2 really good poops since we've been eating squash- sicles and grape-sicles. I think the grape flavor is strong enough to balance out the green stuff. Maybe it's not ideal, but he's actually consuming vegetables really well. And now I have a question. My son has been having constipation. I decided yesterday that meat and eggs decaying in his belly was about the worst combo I could think of, so he has not had any meat or eggs for 2 days now. His poops have definitely been much better and actually, he has been much happier and more energetic than I have seen him in a long time, but of course, I am concerned about protein and he really should be getting a little fat, unless you think avacado supplies enough? I am going to get some coconut oil for the fat purpose this evening. Are there thoughts on the protein and meat factor? I thought that we really had to get past the constipation so it would be OK for a couple of days to not really get any protein while detoxing. How little meat would be acceptable for a 24 pound boy? Would one serving a day be enough? I'd like to go with the minimum until his constipation issue is under control, but of course I want him to be getting an adequate supply of protein. Thank you! Guest guest
What did you substitute for your meat. The only thing G has eaten since starting the diet 4 months ago is meat (pork, chicken, turkey) with green beans or carrots in them in the form of a nugget. Currently, he has almost limited himself to the nuggets as his only food,... well that and pecan butter waffles with honey syurp. I am certain he is getting too much meat and it is contributing to his constipation. I'd love to know what your son ate for those " no meat " days. Thanks! Guest guest
I really do think one serving of meat per day is plenty for a small child like that. Most people eat way more meat and other animal proteins than they need. Certainly, you want to give him the one serving for the protein, but also look at the results you get now that you've reduced the intake. You say his stools are improving, and his disposition is as well. That should tell you that the decrease was what his body needs right now. Like I said, as long as he has some protein source each day, I wouldn't be concerned. Have you introduced some sort of essential fatty acid supplement like a fish oil? That is a good source of fat, and very good for his developing brain. Guest guest
, Do you have any proportions to give us for ratios of grape to green beans, squash to pears, ect.? Guest guest
The veggie-sicles are brilliant. I've recommended combos like this to many a parent. That and smoothies.... with various veggies and even chicken, pureed right in with the fruit and coconut milk. Keep in mind that if you use some coconut milk in all of your popsicles, that is a pretty good fat source. Avocados have lots, too.... nice, healthy fat. Remember that there is PROTEIN in all the veggies, it's just not as concentrated as in the meat and eggs. You may slowly be able to increase the meat and eggs back up a little bit, and stave off constipation with supplemental magnesium, etc. You might log on to fitday.com to find out what his protein requirements are. I really don't know. But you don't have to eat meat and eggs to get protein. Remember nut butters. Not sure if you're using any, but eventually, that is a good protein source (and healthy fat source), too. Guest guest
> > What did you substitute for your meat. Popscicles. Pretty much. He has eaten a ton of popscicles. He has not asked for anything else. He keeps going back to the freezer and wanting more. He has also had chunks (because he won't touch sauce with a pole) of apple and pear and a little carrot and avacado, but mainly he has just been eating a lot of popscicles. I've got everything in the fridge and as he eats up one tray of popscicles I pour out the next batch and we've been alternating between the 2 varieties. He doesn't seem to care which I give him, he's eating both kinds. He did have a very small amount of turkey last night, but not much. He is peeing a lot which I think is because he's getting a lot of water from the popscicles and his bm's are slightly butternut squash colored, but very normal consistency and he even took an epsom salt bath last night. I literally do not remember the last time he took a bath without throwing a complete fit. He stayed in there for about 10 mintues and then pooped making it 2 good sized poops for the day which is wonderful and pretty much a miracle that he was actually playing in the tub and not screaming and trying to escape. Guest guest
> , > Do you have any proportions to give us for ratios of grape to green beans, squash to pears, ect.? I kind of just do it to taste. It's close to 1/2 and 1/2 on the squash and pear one, but a little more pear and probably about equal amounts of coconut milk and water. The grape and green bean needs more grape to hide the green bean taste and the zucchini amount on that is fairly small just because zucchini is such a strong flavor. Guest guest
I didn't realize the coconut milk also had fat, I thought it was just in the oil. Thank you for the protein requirement link. We're not quite up to nut butters yet. I guess it just didn't occur to me that veggies contain protein as well. Thank you!
