Is he on ADEK, ABDEK, or any other vitamin combination designed for

cystic fibrosis patient? If not, consider it, perhaps--helps me! Good

Re: Bruises

Sara,

Our bodies manufacture vitamin K in the intestines, so any time there is

digestive imbalance (i.e., improper diet, diarrhea, and

malabsorption diseases) or use of antibiotics, then vitamin K is destroyed.

Vitamin K is necessary for proper blood clotting and bone

health.

You might try giving Zach a probiotic for a while, even if/when he's not on an

antibiotic to see if this helps. Additionally, you can get

some alfalfa tablets, which are a good source of vitamin K. GNC carries

alfalfa tablets that aren't too large, you could cut them in half

or in quarters for easier swallowing since Zach is still young.

I've bruised easily my entire life and I've always been a slow healer whenever

I'd get a cut or scrape, even though I have a good diet

and take a multivitamin/mineral tablet daily. But my newest multi doesn't

contain K, and I noticed that after a couple weeks being on

this multi that I had bruises all over my legs. Freakish looking, especially

since I wouldn't remember bumping into things.

I started taking three alfalfa tablets (1,500 mg) a day and that cleared up

the problem. But now I also take a high-quality probiotic

whenever I must take an antibiotic OR whenever I've gone on an ice-cream

binge.

I can't stress enough the importance of taking care of intestinal health for

our kids with CF. The repercussions are far greater than just

bruises or inability to gain weight. Food and drug allergies and sensitivities

and malnutrition can result from leaky gut syndrome, which

stems from poor intestinal health.
