Guest guest
, My grand daughter is 25 months old wcf and her poops are just like you describe. I would guess that this is normal for a 2 yr old wcf. Gale > HELLO MY SON CODY POOPS ABOUT 2-3 TIMES A DAY. BECAUSE HE IS MY > FIRST I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS SUPPOSE TO LOOK LIKE. Guest guest
Hi; the poops should be formed kind of like the inside of the colon, and close to brown unless he is eating a lot of dairy; with my " kid " wcf (now grown), we always called the doctor about poops like this; they may add more enzymes or change them, though Ultrase are very good--this can also hap pen if he has been eating a lot of fat. I hope I have not misled you, Love to you and son, n Rojas, wcf, mom of 3; youngest wcf also---- RE:NORMAL POOP? HELLO MY SON CODY POOPS ABOUT 2-3 TIMES A DAY. Guest guest
That sounds like " normal cf poop, " in other words, not the kind he should be having. You are right in thinking that his poops should firmer and brown at this age. There could be several reasons for this... 1. Not enough enzymes given... 2. Too many enzymes given... 3. The enzymes that you have are not working effectively due to being out of date or being subject to temperature fluctuations... 4. The enzymes not being given at the proper time (for the individual) during the meal... 5. Too much acid in the stomach leading to too much acid in the small intestine so the enzymes aren't breaking down properly... 6. Enzymes being given to close after an antacid so that they break down in the stomach rather than the small intestine... 7. The ultrase brand may not work well with your son and you may need to consider switching to another brand... And the list goes on.... Until we know a little more about your son's routines and other meds it is hard to help you. Your best bet would be to talk to the doctor or dietician at your cf clinic. They can help you analyze your son's diet and let you know if an increase or decrease in enzymes is needed, or if a new brand needs to be tried. I know for Patti, she needs to have 1 Pancrease MT4 for every two grams of fat, she needs to take them towards the middle or end of the meal due to a slow emptying stomach, and we have to time her zantac giving times and eating times carefully so that the don't interfer with eachother, and we limit acidic foods and drinks as her stomach is all ready too acidic. Guest guest
We are dealing with this same problem in our house. To include REEKY gas. (I can't count the number of scented candles I've gone through lately). Last summer we went up to 4 ultrase with a meal and the stink went away for about a month. Then it came back and stayed. They say we can't increase Adam's enzymes because he's at his max for his weight. We did change to one MT-18 instead of 4 of the small ones but it's just as bad or worse. Thank you for the list of ideas. I'm going to be very firm with our GI doc the next time we see him. He just laughs when I tell him how stinky it is and ask if there isn't something else we can try. He says it's just " normal " for Adam. But if it stays this " normal " we'll need gas masks soon! It's so embarassing to take him in public on a gassy day, which is almost every day. Again, thanks for the list. I've printed it and it's going to go in his medical file for our next visit. Guest guest
Hi , It sounds like he might need to have more enzymes to me. Talk to the CF clinic and see what they say. Guest guest
Deb, Poop changes color depending on what is eaten recently -- or even days ago. Even if lighter poop sinks, if her stools are consistently light, you may want to have her liver enzymes checked and a GI work up to rule out liver or gall bladder duct obstruction, gall stones, etc. (Is this the same daughter that has been complaining of tummy pain?) Since moving to Chicago, where they have a " scoop your dog's poop " ordinance, I've been treated to the lovely (gasp!) intricacies of my 20-pound Lhasa Apso's poop. Diet makes a big difference. When I give him cheap dry dog food, such as Dog Chow, Beneful, IAMS, or O*N*E, his poop is drier and stinks, his coat becomes dry and his skin itches (even when I add some canola oil and flax seed and vitamins/minerals to the diet). Yet, when I feed him the expensive Wellness brand (made with sweet potato, flax and white fish) his poop is softer, has a bit of a green cast, doesn't smell at all, but best of all because he has allergies, his skin is healthier with the better food. I know this doesn't pertain to you, but for others, here is an interesting " poop color " link for exclusively breastfed babies: http://www.drjaygordon.com/pediatricks/poop.htm Kim But what if it is light and doesn't float?? Is it still OK?? Deb A
