Guest guest
Hi, How well does DOC band therapy help to correct facial asymmetries? Our ortho at CT said that in addition to correcting our daughter's plagio, her facial asymmetries would eventually start to correct also after the plagio is corrected. It was suggested that the facial asymmetries would " fall into place " , so to speak, after the plagio is corrected. On the other hand, a friend mentioned that their son's pediatrician told them that only physical therapy will correct facial asymmetries and that DOC band therapy alone will not. Does anyone have advice on this topic? Thanks. , father to (9 months old)
Guest guest
Hello,My son Evan has facial asymmetry as well. The right side of his forehead, right eye, and right cheek are pushed forward. Along with seeing the orthotist at Hanger we see a plastic surgeon at Vanderbilt University, Dr. . He is a cranio-facial surgeon and DDS and has over 20 years experience in this area. He said that the band helps the forehead and back of the head to even out. Then the eye and cheek follow. But it could take up to a year or 2 after the treatment for the face to catch up. It was kind of hard to have faith because it takes alot of patience, and I won't know for sure until it happens for my son. But I've talked to another parent whose son went to Dr. . Her son had the same facial asymmetry and she said that her son, now 4 has no facial asymmetry. She said that once the plagio was corrected and the band came off she could still see the facial asymmetry, but that Dr. was so right about the face catching up in time. I also just spoke with another lady that I ran into at Walgreens today. She said her daughter wore a helmet and saw Dr. . Same exact story! It really is reassuring to hear these stories because I don't see it yet in my son, but I definitely have hope that I will someday. But I would also consider physical therapy, too. It could only help. The orthotist told me that PT for torticollis helps facial asymmetry. My son has never been treated for tort because his ped never diagnosed him with it. I only discovered on my own that he must have had tort. I am going to bring it up in his next well-check appt next month and request PT for the tort. I'm sure it will only help. Guest guest
I'm assuming your daughter has Torticollis as well. When my son went for his consult at CT, the tech told me that Torticollis pulls at the base of the skull, causing the asymmetries. With physical therapy, it can be improved. My son's plagio was caused by the Torticollis since he could not move his neck, he was always resting on one spot on his head. If he does have Torticollis and is not in PT, i would check it out immediately. My son is 17 months and got his helmet from CT 3 days ago. They will only start treat up to 18 months. My husband started researching this because he noticed his eyes and his ears were both asymmetrical. (I was in denial) My pediatrician and the neurosurgeon at children's hospital all said " don't worry, it should go away on it's own " . It never did. Now, I have a 17mo old with asymmetries in a helmet and PT. I should have done this months ago. > > Hi, > > How well does DOC band therapy help to correct facial asymmetries? Guest guest
My son has never received pt (he does not have tort) but his facial assymetries (eye, forehead bossing and ear assymetries) were corrected with the docband (only needed 1) On 4/15/10, rsmith1000 <rsmith1000@...> wrote: > Hi, > > How well does DOC band therapy help to correct facial asymmetries? Guest guest
Oh also, for us the face corrected while still in the band. Though then again he had no tort. It happened at the very end though. I also forgot to say that he had jaw assymetry, that is not something you just notice so some don't see it but we could if we looked when he screamed or otherwise opened his mouth wide enough. We looked for it though. That also corrected in band but he till had a pretty good overbite. He I now 2 yrs post band and I have noticed his overbite has improved (not gone but improved enough to notice) On 4/16/10, Durocher <funwith4@...> wrote: > My son has never received pt (he does not have tort) but his facial > assymetries (eye, forehead bossing and ear assymetries) were corrected > with the docband (only needed 1) > > On 4/15/10, rsmith1000 <rsmith1000@...> wrote: >> Hi, >> >> How well does DOC band therapy help to correct facial asymmetries? Guest guest
,That is such encouraging news. Thanks for sharing that with us. It's difficult to see how the band can affect the facial shape since it only holds points on the back, front and sides of the head. But many people are saying that the face is corrected as well. Thanks again.
