Guest guest
I was wondering if anyone else watched the new show on CBS called Joan of Acardia? Last night they continued on with the young character that had CF. When they showed the first show, I was angered at how they only dwelled on death on the show (The pity factor) and I emailed a complaint that they need to explain the disease better than having a 7 year old boy say he has CF and he is going to die. Well in the second episode he died. Again, the pity factor and God told Joan that the character was in a better place. With the perfect opportunity to explain, it is easier to take the high road when it is not the " IN " disease. (Not putting down, AIDS, Cancer, but they get more explained in TV shows) Again, I have emailed a complaint and like the last time I expect nothing. Hope everyone is well. is right now. Guest guest
Traci: Unfortunately, most programs that include a person (usually a young child) with CF get their information from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, which stresses that CF is a killer of children. It enhances the CFF's methodology to motivate via pity donations to their organization. I personally find it repugnant, as it is not only demeaning to those of us who have survived into adulthood (the overwhelming majority of those with the disease) but it gives the parents of young children a pessimistic outlook for their child. I have challenged the CFF many times about this, only to be ignored. I believe that more parents should express their feelings about TV programs that offer little hope for those with CF. Maybe eventually the producers will catch on. Guest guest
I did see the show last night and the first episode as well. I was really dissappointed last night especially because they didn't even mention the fact that Rocky had CF, just that he died from " a disease " and that he was obsessed with death. Wow that's explicit (sarcasm). The first episode just said that he had CF, not anything about what it was. And yet we wonder why there's such a need to raise awareness. Take care! Guest guest
I am so glad this is a topic. My girls are in love with this show! The first episode I was unaware that the character Rocky had CF until the mother opened up the draw with all the meds. , 8yowocf, turned to me and said hey mom he has CF after seeing that scene. At that point I turned the channel and went upstairs to watch the rest fearing the worst cause for dramamatic purposes. I was disappointed that the producers did not take more opportunity to educate at that point. Maureen, 13yowcf was not home to see that one. So I just left the issue alone. Normally we tape it when they are not home but I had forgotten that night. Last night they watched it not knowing the full storyline. Surprisingly, the whole idea of Rocky dying did not disturb them. They looked at Rocky as what led Joan to help her friend Adam with his mothers death. (pretty deep for two young girls) I love this show and I am disappointed with the fact that they made CF such a downer. But I am more appalled with MTV and the girl with CF on the Real World. This is a reality show with a " CHILD " that is intentionally committing suicide (in my eyes) on national TV. CF is a disease that no one cares about now. What will peoples attitudes be like toward CF when the see a girl that SMOKE AND " PARTIES " because she just wants to LIVE on TV? This kid needs serious help and not just in the medical department. At least Joan of Arcadia was one episode, the Real World is week after week. Does anyone know what we, as parents of children with CF, can do to voice our disgust? Maybe a letter writing campaign followed with letters to our local paper. I HATE these Reality shows because they are anything but real!
