an orthotist also. So confusing. thank you

My 4 month old daughter was just confirmed to have failry substantial

positional brachycephaly. Her cranial index was 1.0 (I guess this means that her

head is the same measurement side to side as it is front to back?) Her head is

fairly symmetrical, just very flat across the back. She has no facial assymetry

at all. She was seen by the neurology department at Childrens Hospital of

Boston, who refered us to Hanger orthotics, where she was fitted for a helmet

using the 3-d laser scanner. Her helmet should come in later this week.

> I am now reading about different types of helmets and bands and am unsure

whether the Hanger is the right way to go? It may be too late since she gets her

band later this week. I did not know I had a choice-I just trusted that

Childrens Hospital would send me to the best place. It is only now that I have

done more reasearch that I realized there are various choices. My sister in law

is in graduate school for prostetics and orthotics and told me that the person

who fit my daughter is one of the leading specialists in cranial orthotics on

the east coast. So I know that he has a lot of experience in this field- he

teaches national courses on pediatric cranial orthotics. He was very promising

and felt that we would see a huge improvement. He felt she would need to wear

the helmet for about 3 months. Does anyone else have any experience with the

Hanger band rather than the other types and can anyone explain the differences

to me? From what I understand (and what it states on their website), the Hanger

band is an active method, however I have read posts on here that state

otherwise. It seems like the band is only as good as the person fitting it, so

perhaps the type of band does not matter as much as the expertise of the

orthotist? That is what I am hoping. Any advice would be appriciated- mainly on

the difference between helmet types and whether anyone has had good experience

with the Hanger band for brachycephaly (rather than plagio). Are there any

before and after brachycephalic pics for those who went with the Hanger? Thanks

in advance!

We also went with Hanger, and we are getting our Helmet tomorrow. My son will

be 7 months on the 5th of Dec and our Children's hospital referred us there

also. I have had major troubles with receptionist with her not wanting to bill

my insurance company and then doing it and getting it denied on purpose because

she would rather I pay out of pocket so they would get more money... I am hoping

we get better service with his helmet and the check-ups than we have dealing

with the receptionist..

The person we saw was Heckathorn, at the South Easton MA office. He was

very good with Sophie and seemed very knowledgable. We get her helmet on Friday.

I will post updates. I hope this is the right choice- I didn't even look into CT

or the Straband because I just assumed Children's woul dknow the best place to

go. My sister in law spoke very highly of him.

Who did you see in Massachusetts that you were not impressed with? Was it CT?

Hello and welcome to the group. My daughter wore a starband for brachy. Starband

and hanger band are very similar. For some reason some hanger orthos even use

starbands. Docband are similar but lighter weight and more open. All three bands

work by holding the growth in prominent areas and leaving room for growth where

the head is flat. My daugther had very good results, but it took 5 months of

wear. She started wearing her band at 5 mo old. Her photos (before/after) are in

the photos section of this group under Our Plagio Babies S/Sydney M. Our

specialist initially mesured her head at 1.0. When we got the scan for her band

it was a bit lower (.97 I think). Like you I also just went to the ortho

recommended by our doctor. In our case we were lucky to have a good one. It was

actually one of the orthos in that office that told me about this group - nearly

5 yrs ago. Hanger can work very well, but with both Hanger and Starband it

depends a lot on the ortho you are seeing. Hopefully the one you are going to is

as good as your SIL says.

Hi ,

Sydney is adorable (both before and after!) I hope that we may see similar

results with Sophie. It seems like, from what I amm reading, brachycephaly may

be harder to correct than plagiocephaly? I will keep everyone posted and

hopefully in a few months I will be able to post her before and after pics too

:) I was feeling pretty bad about the whole thing until we went to Children's

hopsital right before Christmas to have her head measured. Boy did that put

things into perspective for me! So many really sick kids- if this is her biggest

obstacle she is very lucky. Thanks for sharing your pics!

I would report the receptionist. they actually over charge insurance companies so they would get more from them than you as a rule. Anytime I have told a doctor I will be paying out of pocket they always take a percentage off that they would have charged otherwise. Maybe she's new and doesn't know how to do these things? After you're denied you can take it up with the insurance yourself though which might be better? From: jamiewells2110

I am not in MA. I saw CT and felt like it was just another business transaction

for them. I am looking around even though this is who the specialist

recommended.
