limit on enzymes?

I think I have read medical abstracts that stated very high doses of

enzymes can cause fibrosing colonopathy. Pharmaceutical companies

use to produce very high dose enzymes, but have stopped doing this

because of the risks associated with developing that condition.

Actually, I think that it had something to do with the ingredients

of the enteric coating of the enzyme beads in certain brands that

caused the problems.

That said, your child's doctor will give you a ball-park figure for

the amount of enzymes your child should take, then you will probably

learn to tweak the dosage for best absorption.

Pancreatic function varies widely between people with cf, and also

may vary over time for an individual, so there is no perfect formula

for figuring how many enzymes per day is right.

Also, lots of fat and protein in a meal will require higher doses

than little fat and protein.

Your child's specialist can tell you if your child is on a high dose

or low dose of enzymes for age and weight compared to averages.

Another thing to keep in mind is the strength of the enzymes your

child is taking. If you have eight Pancrease MT4 capsules with a

meal, that seems like a lot of pills. But if you consider that this

is the same dose as two Pancrease MT16 capsules, then it doesn't

seem like so many to take, but the dosage is equal.

So by asking " is there a limit on the number of enzymes you can take

per day? " are you asking about the number of pills? There are

limits, but you are going to have to read labels, package inserts,

and do some math to find out what they are for your particular brand

and strength of enzymes.

Clear as mud???
