Guest guest
Hi Patti, I would only be using the goat yoghurt as a starter. My problem is The farmer gave me the name of the company where he buys his yoghurt starter culture which I have listed in other emails today, but they all seem to be illegal. I cannot find a starter culture that is legal, Gi Pro Health do not ship to South Africa And if they did it would be statistically impossible to ship from USA to South Africa in two days as they say on their website because the Progurt needs to be shipped in two days on ice. I really do'nt know what to do.....?????!!!!! Is there any contact anybody could give me in South Africa where I could get some details on yoghurt starter????? Re: Legal strains of probiotcis Tina, You wrote: << have been able to locate a manufacturer of probiotic strains. Is there anything I need to watch out for. Would there be anything illegal they could add to the culture.>> As I said yesterday, you just need to compare all the ingredients.... anything they add.... fillers, etc...... to the list on pecanbread.com under " Supplements " . It's the list of legal/illegal supplement additives that you want to copy and compare to the label. <<According to SCD only L. Acidophilus and S. Boulardii are legal. What about the probiotic strains contained in the GI Pro Health Yoghurt starter. There are three listed. L Bulgaricus, Stretococcus Thermophilus, and L. Casei are these three also legal???>> Those three are legal IN STARTER ONLY. l.bulgaricus and s.thermophilus are strains that simply do the job of fermentation. They are present in pretty much all yogurt starter. I am not as familiar with the role l.casei plays..... but I just know that we are only able to use that strain in a starter... not in a supplement. <<I finally spoke to the farmer of the goats yoghurt this morning. Is it necessary to find out which strains of bacteria he uses as a starter for his yoghurt.>> YES, it is necessary. l.acidophilus, s.thermophilus, l.bulgaricus and l.casei are allowed .... any other strains would make this illegal. And, you are only going to use this yogurt as a STARTER.... right? I assume so.... just wanted to be sure. Patti
Guest guest
Tina, I'm sorry you're in such a bind. If you really cannot obtain any other starter, I would suggest you go ahead and use the one of the two yogurts you listed earlier. You said they contained: <<Bifido Bacterium, L. Acid, Strep. Thermophilus>> <<Bifido Bacterium, L. acid, Strep. Thermophilus, L. Delbrueckii >> I honestly don't know anything about l.delbrueckii.... so I can't say which one of these would be the better. Neither is ideal.... but then, I'm thinking that having NO yogurt at all would be worse. I really don't know. I'm just inclined to say that in your situation, you have to make an exception... and go forward. Maybe others here would disagree with me... but I think it's okay. Of course, you will follow the directions for making the SCD yogurt... fementing for 24 hrs, etc. Then you will need to see how your child does. Maybe you can keep searching in the meantime, and eventually find a source.
