Guest guest
My daughter had brachy, but sorry I don't really have advice for you. She had some bulging there, but probably less than some kids. I don't think it changed much in either direction while she was banded. I remember our ortho mentioning that it is a common problem with brachy, but if I remember correctly he was dismissing it as something they can't do much about. I do agree though that cutting the ears higher than needed wouldn't help the situation. One thing about banding I always recommend is taking your own pictures. That way you have evidence of things getting better/worse rather than just relying on memory and trying to convince the ortho or yourself. -christine sydney, 5 yrs, starband grad > > My son will be 7 months old tomorrow and has been in his starband for three weeks now. Before deciding on the starband we had a consultation at CT but due to the distance we would have to travel to their facility, we ended up going with our local orthitist. My son has brachycephaly with a little bit of plagio also. My concern is that he has buldging right over both ears. CT said that this was fairly common in babies with brachy, but the local orthotist we are going to said he has never seen it. So...when my son first got his helmet, the orthostist made some marks on the band so that adjustments could be made. It was a little too low around his eyes and he made the space around the ear bigger. When he shaved off the part around the ear, he just happened to leave the part exposed where my son has the bulging. I mentioned it to him and he said we would " watch " it. I have noticed it getting worse! I'm not sure what I should do. Has anyone ever dealt with this, or did/does your child have the same type of bulging? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. > > Thank You > Brittany >
Guest guest
Thank you so much for your input. We are in Bakersfield California. Fortunately the helmet does not fit him loose, actually it is quite snug. We are seeing good results with the rounding of his head, but the bulging on that side is definitely worsening. I am shocked that his orthotist(who said he has 7 years of experience with cranial remolding) has never seen bulging above the ears of an infant with brachy. He has another appointment on the 27th, at this time we are supposed to discuss the issue. I am going to request that another helmet be ordered. It is disheartening because we had to pay out of pocket for the band and cannot afford to purchase another band due to our orthotists not knowing what he is doing. > > > My son will be 7 months old tomorrow and has been in his starband > > for three weeks now. Guest guest
Just the other day my ortho said to watch the bones above her ears as they can get irritated. He asked me to keep an eye on it. She doesn't have any budging there. So maybe it's not that uncommon? From: b_carranza12 <b_carranza12@...>Plagiocephaly Sent: Thu, December 23, 2010 1:37:50 PMSubject: Re: something that has been bothering me Thank you so much for your input. Guest guest
If you go on Cranial Tech's website you will see the bulging behind the ears is very common. Our CT person had seent his all the time and said that it would " soften " with the banding so that later it may get flatter. We actually saw the bulging on each side completely go away with the DOC band! I dont think your local Ortho knows what he is talking about. I would definatly take Thads advice and call and maybe even fight to ask for a refund and take the trip to your CT place unless you have another local Ortho that you can go too. Good Luck with your journey and I hope this works our for you whatever you decide. We went with DOC band even though insurance didn't cover it and the drive was further because we haven't heard a bad thing about them, and we had heard some not so good stories about the starband place in our area. Ive heard good things overall about starband just not in our area. GooD Luck! > > > > My son will be 7 months old tomorrow and has been in his starband for three weeks now.
