It was a difficult christmas as Henry got really sick. He was/still is a mess. It started with runny nose, fever around 100, and then progressed quickly to a blocked nose with green and yellow stuff and then he woke up with eyes and nose crusted over with this goo. He was very irritable and would fall asleep in our arms and immediately at bedtime. A few days of eye drops and 9 days of augmentin starting on new years eve, and he is still very congested. At times he is so congested he gags, almost vomiting and his cough has been worsening. > > We saw his pediatrician yesterday and he prescribed Bactrim because a call to the cf clinic showed that he had cultured Enterobacter cloacae in his last two cultures. The problem with the bactrim was that we had 1.75 teaspoons to get down and he vomited if he swallowed just a little. Two vomiting spells later, this evening we started a prescription for zithromax. He doesn't want to even try it and he spits it out. I am not sure how much of the initial dose went in. It is all trying on my nerves, as I am not feeling that great either. I am concerned that this is getting ugly fast and that it isn't going to get better if we can't get antibiotic down his throat. Mixing the zithromax into babyfood seemed to temporarily jeopardize the enzymes at the next feeding. He was highly suspicious. Any comments or suggestions? He has a clinic visit thursday and we will see an ENT then. > > > mom to Henry 2 years old w/cf > > > > >
Guest guest
, I am sorry to hear that Henry has been so sick. Have you tried to put a medicine syringe to the back of his mouth to administer the med and then give him a sip of a favorite juice or popsicle? We used to have a horrible time with spitting/vomiting her meds when she was a baby, but at about 2, if she realized that I was giving her something that she wanted after the med, she was more receptive. If she didn't swallow the med, no sip or lick. I hope this helps and I hope that Henry is feeling better soon. Mom of 5 with CF enterobacter cloacae It has been a long time since I posted. Guest guest
, I hope that Henry gets better real quick. It seems that this is a hard time for a lot of people on this list. In part, because this season brings on more sickness. My daughter has been depressed lately too (Abby's mom). Well, maybe she has been depressed for a long time and it is surfacing more now. Abby was at clinic yesterday. They put her to sleep for the PFT and a CT scan. She was still loopy at 7:00pm last night. She was like a little drunk and couldn't walk. By 9:00pm was she back to her old monkey self. Abby has also had a cough for about a month. Antibiotics didn't help. Her test results should be available today. Hopefully the clinic will call with the results. I am anxiuos to hear them. Please let us know how Henry's clinic visit goes. Gale Grandma to Abby (2yo wcf) > It has been a long time since I posted. Guest guest
, It just occurred to me that this is ecoli. Right? If so, Abby has cultured it several times also. It's extremely common and if Henry didn't have cf, they wouldn't even treat it. Abby's ecoli cleared up with anitbiotics. The ecoli is a concern for Abby because she has swallowing problems (some goes into lungs if not thick enough). They do not want the ecoli to get into her lungs. Good luck Thursday. Guest guest
Hi, Gale I don't think e. coli is the same thing. Yes, e.coli is naturally occuring in the intestines of animals and humans, but can be treacherous when abnormal amounts are found that were gotten from contaminated food. The strain 0157:H7 is the one you most hear about. You probably remember the cases of people eating undercooked or rare beef, drinking unpastueurized apple cider, milk, unwashed lettuce, etc. where the e. coli bacteria was present. In those cases, people got very sick and some died. I, in fact, had a very bad case of e. coli in 1996 and was hospitalized. It was awful. Hope this helps. Guest guest
, I am so sorry to hear Henry is feeling bad. Zach just started something today. He is already down for his nap at 7:30 so who knows what is going on. I understand how crazy it can make you feel when they won't take their meds especially Zithromax. You get five chances and the stuff is gone. The first dose is a double dose too. The popcicle idea may work because it will numb his tastebuds. Henry is probably already on tylenol or motrin, but I always had to have Zach on that before he would swallow his meds. He seems to get a lot of sore throats along with the runny nose stuff. I wish I had some magic trick to tell you. I have even restrained Zach on the floor and force fed him his meds. This is very rare, but the doctors told me to " get the medicine in him " , so I did. I feel lousy doing it, but Zach didn't gag or vomit from it. Henry might gag if you just force it down his throat though. To get Zach to take his 15ml of Previcid everyday, he runs away and I chase him. He just wants to be chased. When he is done with that he takes the prevacid with any fuss. Is the medicine white? You mentioned once that he doesn't like white foods. Maybe you could ask the pharmacist to flavor it. I know Zantac can become chocolate flavored. Not every pharmacy can do this and not every med can be flavored, but maybe that could help. Another thing to try, this may sound weird, but sometimes Zach refuses things, until he gets to help. He will refuse to eat something by spoon, but if he helps mommy feed him then he will chow down. Maybe you could let him help. Since he feels bad he may not cooperate though. Are you using any saline spray and using a bulb syringe to clear his nose? Zach used to hate that thing and now he will point it and his nose when he gets stuffy. It is amazing how much junk those things will suck out. Others have had luck with the TTO inhalations too. It might not get rid of the bacteria, but it might help him breathe better. I hope you and Henry start to feel better soon! Sara > It has been a long time since I posted. It was a difficult christmas as Henry got really sick. He was/still is a mess. Guest guest
I just had another thought about Henry's illness. Could it be a fungus and not a bacteria causing this? I know it sounds gross, but his cultures are clear for bacteria. There are special meds for fungus infections. It could be something to discuss with the cf center. I wish I could be more help. You have always given me such great advice and wish I could repay the favor. Sara > It has been a long time since I posted. It was a difficult christmas as Henry got really sick. Guest guest
Thanks Jill. You are right. I looked it up in Toni's micro biology text book and it is not ecoli. It is present in the intestines though. That's about as much as I could understand. Gale > > All the best wishes heading your way .
