Butter and Dry Curd Cottage Cheese have casein, right? Is the yogurt from goat

milk?

[Norton AntiSpam] Chloe's Diet , Antibiotics & Yogurt -

Help

Patti suggested I post Chloe's diet to get feedback and advice. She

has been on the SCD for 2 months. She is 2 (this week) and has

unexplained developmental delays. None of her MDs have mentioned

autism. She drank milk for one year prior to us knowing she had an

allergy to casein.

Saturday:

Scrambled eggs with avocado fried in butter

Smoothie (almond butter, banana, yogurt, dry curd cottage cheese)

1/3 banana nut muffin from BTVC

1/3 steamed pear

1/3 steamed peach

10oz of 1/4 welch's purple grape juice and 3/4 water

Kirkman's multi-vitamin/mineral

Kirkmans' probiotic (the legal one)

Acetyl-L carnitine (confirmed no illegals)

Nordic Naturals Fish oil (1tsp)

Sunday:

Scrambled eggs with avocado fried in butter

Smoothie (almond butter, banana, yogurt, dry curd cottage cheese)

Two tiny bites of porkchop cooked in olive oil with honey on top

Acorn squash

Same supplements

She has had a cold for weeks - first coughing, now green nasal

discharge and yellow/green eye discharge. I have been avoiding

antibiotics but she is miserable. My husband, son and I all took

antibiotics to get better. I think I have to give them to her. It

has literally been over 3 weeks. At any rate, she isn't eating well

right now.

Yogurt question - twice my yogurt lid has popped off (both the outer

and inner lids) while making yogurt. Both times I caught it right

away but what if I don't?

Thanks!

Amy

Amy,

Are you making your SCD yogurt with COW milk? Or goat?

If you know she has an " allergy to casein " , why are you using the dry curd

cottage cheese? It DOES have casein in it, and so does the yogurt.

You don't HAVE to use dry curd cottage cheese, just because it's in the book. If

a child has problem.... allergies or sensitivities to cow dairy, we suggest they

start SCD completely dairy free, with a probiotic. Then later, after they've

been on SCD for a while, we encourage parents to make SCD yogurt with GOAT milk,

and introduce it VERY slowly and cautiously.... just a TINY amount and

increasing gradually.

I have forgotten what you said about how her stools are right now, but looking

at your other foods, I would suggest that it's probably too soon for any nut

flours (I assume you're using nut flour in the muffins). I would usually

suggest replacing any nut flour in recipes with nut BUTTER.... but almond

butter wouldn't be my first choice for a child who is fairly new to SCD. I

would suggest pecan butter (you'd have to make this yourself in a food

processor, adding some sunflower oil, or similar light, healthy oil, as you

process... otherwise it turns out too dry and won't blend all the way

smooth).... or macadamia butter, or hazelnut butter. If you DO use almond

butter, I would suggest you make sure it's made with BLANCHED almonds (no dark

brown specks... that means they left the fibrous skins on when they made the

almonds into butter). Digestive Wellness sells a blanched almond butter.

www.digestivewellness.com .

When cooking meats, I would go with slow-cooking, such as in a crockpot... or

boiling, or baking... rather than frying in a skillet. Your goal is to make

everything as easy to digest as possible. Slow cooking meats until they are

" falling off the bone " tender, makes them easier to digest.

I would also suggest going with butternut squash, instead of acorn. It's got a

finer, less fibrous texture. Most kids do very well on it.

Are you absolutely SURE your Kirkman multi-vite is a legal one? Just checking.

I honestly think that *some* of her cold symptoms at this point *COULD* be

coming from your inclusion of the cow dairy. I would pull that for this

particular child.... right now. The symptoms also *could* be partly die-off.

It's really hard to tell. I know there are all kinds of viruses going around

right now. Seems like everyone around me has been sick off and on lately.

**BUT... if you're seeing green snot, in my experience as a mom of four, that

can be a red flag for an ear infection or a sinus infection. I would get her

checked out right away. I hate using antibiotics, too..... and I would probably

use all kinds of other alternative remedies first, if this were my child.

E-mail me off list if you want some suggestions. I think it might be time for a

trip to the doctor, though.... just to be sure of what you're dealing with. Then

you can know what's up and choose to try some alternatives for a couple of days,

if you want to, if she has no severe infection.
