Interesting DOC band fitting

I took my son Friday for his 4th fitting, he's going weekly. I've been mentioning a vertical indentation that's centered in the back of his head for the last few weeks. That didn't change but this week I also added that I'm seeing noticeable amount of more growth on the corrected side in the back then on the holding side. BTW, my son has brachy and a some plagio too, I started this whole thing thinking that his brachy was what was wrong but I'm getting the impression that CI has been treating the plagio first and foremost and his brachy 2nd. Even to the extent that the tech said in an off handed comment that she wanted to take another photo study and talk to corporate and make sure he's in the right type of band? What's up with that? It's been only 4 weeks as of last week. I also know that he's had growth spurts. The 3rd fitting he grew 4mm and last week it was another 2 with a total of 12 mm in the 4 weeks.

I'm going to upload the photo study. He's got a great amount of change on his left profile side since that's the side that was shaved out after 2 weeks. The right side appears to not have much change. This last week they shaved out about half on the right side but left some for a holding point I guess.

We're going back tomorrow instead of waiting until Friday. She didn't want that much time to go by without being checked. I'm concerned I'm going to hear that he's going to need a new band after only 5 weeks. Since CI is out of network for our insurance I had to pay most out of pocket. Just doesn't seem fair that they might be talking about a new band after a short amount of time. Did they possibly pick the wrong band type to begin with? Has my son grown too fast and that's the reason? Has anyone had this happen before? He first got the band when he was right around 4 1/2 months and as of this Thursday it will be 5 weeks in the band. I'm not sure I'm happy with the correction so far since I really don't know what a normal head should look like. I don't have anything to really compare too.

Thanks in advance for anyone who looks at his pictures. They are in the Our Plagio babies-N named M-ps1 through3Cheri

Cheri,

In babies with both brachy and plagio, it is normal to treat the plagio first.

My son has both and we have been treating plagio since day 1. I have been told

if they allow the head to add length, it may make the asymmetry worse.

If they have been shaving one side of the helmet in the back, they have been

treating plagio. However, there is a small amount of space built into the band

for the brachy to improve on the holding/non shaven side. My son has never had

anything done with the holding side, and his CI has decreased about 7%.

Glancing at top view pictures, he did have mild flattening on the left side,

which now appears to be pretty well taken care of. It sounds like the

technician did the right thing by recently shaving the foam on the right side.

If it is the foam towards the middle/center seam, they are now treating for the

brachy. The foam towards his ear will be left intact as a holding point so that

you do not gain more width.

I would not worry at this point, as it sounds like your technician is being very

proactive. She may have concerns about the treatment plan going forward and

just wants to double check with someone with more experience before she acts. I

have heard of numerous cases where CT provides a new helmet, free of charge,

when there is something " not quite right " with the current helmet.

BTW...he is very cute and his head is really coming along nicely!
