Guest guest
Hi. My family started SCD two and a half weeks ago. Mostly, it was for my son (7) who has salicylate sensitivity (we discovered this by being on the Feingold Diet--which we've been on for 2 years) but I thought my daughter's (she's 5) sporadic eczema might be helped by it and my recent food sensitivities (intermittent reflux, intermittent hives on my bottom and sometimes my head--I think maybe it's a salicylate issue, but I'm not sure). So we all decided to heal our guts and now I have a ton of questions. 1) ME: I used to vary between normal stools and slight constipation, but generally normal stools. I have had increasing gas issues in the past year, but I it seemed to be related to either wheat or milk, so I had cut them both down with pretty good results. So I'm surprised that I am now having major digestive issues: a lot of gas and pale stools. Are the pale stools normal? I know they can be a sign of serious problems, but is it common in the early days of SCD? Why do I suddenly have a lot of gas? 2) My daughter: Right after we started, she got a HORRENDOUS flare up of eczema. It has always been pretty rare, but if it flared up, it was a small rough, pink, 1 inch patch on her wrist or something. Now, her hands are totally raw and boken skin and a little bleeding. Now it's gotten somewhat better, but they still hurt. I tried putting Aquaphor on--that hurt. Olive oil was ok, but she doesn't like having something on her hands. I read that there is a connection between the gut and eczema, but does this make sense? 3) My son: he is really sensitive to salicylates and he hasn't been able to tolerate honey (not even tupelo). I've been using " 100% pure dextrose " since I read that Elaine Gottchall said it is probably okay. I want to move towards honey, but we tried it last night (after 2 and half weeks on SCD) and he had a crying fit tonight. So I'm a little discouraged. His behavior (which is his " reaction " ) has gotten worse on SCD--which I know often happens. I know some of this must be die-off. (He does " explosions " a lot of the time--definitely out of place) and this has increased a lot. How long can I expect this to last? Also, could the yogurt be making his explosions worse? And has anyone had experience with reversing a salicyate sensitivity? I be happier if we could do honey, for sure, but tomato sauce would be divine! I'm sure that every person is different--and someone just wrote that we can't know someone's gut status, and I understand that. But is there any idea of a time frame for *some* improvement? Thank you soooo much! I know this was long! Eileen
