We have just started using more caution regarding peanut butter more recently,

because we've seen a correlation with it and some of the kids who have not made

the greatest progress on SCD. If he does fine on it, I would go ahead.... just

be watchful and if things start going south, this might need to be pulled. I do

use some peanut butter with my daughter now.... but she's been SCD since May

'06. It is a legume... not a nut, so it's sort of in that " iffy " category. We

think most kids stand a better chance of doing better on SCD without peanut

butter, in the beginning.

There is also a mold issue with peanut butter, that is not really an SCD

issue.... but you just want to be aware of it. Peanuts can be contaminated with

a mold that has a toxin called " aflatoxin " . So, you might want to do a Google

search for more information just so you're informed about that. From what I've

read, it seems to be present in only very small quantities in peanut butter in

the United States... but since aflatoxin is carcinogenic, it's worth looking

into.

Can someone please refresh me about the use of peanut butter on this

diet? We are on month 2. I made peanut butter pancakes this a.m with

egg, pb and baking soda and what do you know they actually looked like

a pancake and G ate them. (I have tried 15 times/variations to make a

pancake he would eat- this is the only one). I also made the peanut

butter brownie recipe- he ate that too. I am trying to find SOMETHING

he will eat for breakfast. For the last 2 months it has been pears or

sneaky pear-veggie sauce. I am having battles now in the am to get

him to eat- he's burnt out and refuses EVERYTHING else. You guys have

given several ideas - but none worked. I know PB is a more advanced

food, and I am going to keep an eye on his pooh to see if i see any

real changes, but I know i have read somewhere about PB and being

cautious with it. oh yeah -Tried the nut butters - they don't fly

either. Using Smuckers Natural peanut butter (oil on top stuff).

In the last couple of weeks, I took PB out of K's diet entirely and she's calmed

down a bit. It can cause problems with anyone of us at any time. Jenn & K 20

I have read that Valencia peanuts have less chance of mold than

Virginia peanuts. This may be why some kids do better with Maranatha

Organic peanut butter. But I'd be cautious with this, too.

Becky,

The brand is legal, but I don't think it is a good idea to be giving him

peanutbutter yet. We started peanutbutter a couple of months in. iel was

waking up in the night screaming, or crying and screaming in his sleep. He'd

done this when on a typical American diet from about the age of two and a half

years, and it stopped when we started SCD right at his third birthday. I

couldn't figure out why it was starting up again, and I kept posting on the list

about it. Patty finally connected the peanutbutter thing, and I dropped it.

The sleep problems stopped in a day or two after stopping the peanutbutter. Not

to say that G will have the same manifestation of peanutbutter sensitivity, but

a whole lot, if not most, of the kids just seem to have a problem with it until

a lot of healing has taken place. Also, you had a whole lot of infractions up

until you restarted at the new year. I think you're jumping the gun. I know

you are excited about G finally eating some things that he enjoys, but it's just

not a good idea.
