Guest guest
YIKES! Talk about a sanitizer that leaves a residue! I must be, like, the king of bad ideas, after the experiments I posted here regarding splinting an ear with tissue adhesive. This sounds like a bad idea, even to ME. *Please* query the helmet manufacturer before taking the pediatrician's advice to heart. Are you sure they didn't say " chlorhexidine, " and maybe you confused that with Chlorox? Even then, though, it would be more conventional to apply it to the skin side of the problem. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MRSA#Decolonization As you can see from that article, alcohol is the first choice for killing MRSA, so I don't see why the pediatrician would want to stray from the normal cleaning unless a bacteriostatic residue is the intent. If not, and bleaching the helmet is really what the doctor ordered, you might instead pursue the possibility of using chlorine dioxide (Oxine), which at least breaks down quickly. I'd still follow that with alcohol, too, to displace the residual water. -- Thad Launderville Montpelier, VT Clara age 2, STARband '10 On Apr 28, 2010, at 7:53 PM, doorbeek wrote: > My new pediatrician (a dermatologist specialist) says to clean > helmet w bleach (in light of staph infection). > > Anyone clean it with bleach? Guest guest
I didn't - but I would say NO!... The foam is porous and the bleach could get caught in the pores, later leeching out on to babys skin... which would cause a chemical burn. I've ALWAYS heard only clean with rubbing alcohol. It kills bacteria and dries quickly. What did the dr think the bleach would do??? Jen Mom to Luli - 4 yrs old Torticollis, Plagio, Syringomyelia Anyone clean helmet w/bleach? My new pediatrician (a dermatologist specialist) says to clean helmet w bleach (in light of staph infection). Anyone clean it with bleach? If so, how? O. Guest guest
I agree, don't try it. I think all the band providers recommend alcohol. I have heard of some orthos and parents recommending gentle shampoo (which I don't recommend). At least shampoo is okay for a baby's head. Bleach sounds very unsafe. -christine sydney, 4 yrs, starband grad > > I didn't - but I would say NO!...
