i personally feel 6 mo is still quite early so you should see good results, also with growth slowing down you may only have to go every other week at that point.  I am very pro band but I would probably wait IF you are willing to give it 110% to try repo while waiting

Hi,I am new to the group and I am seeking advice. My daughter was diagnosed with moderate plagiocephaly at her 4 month check up. My pediatrician recommended repositioning and waiting until 6 months and see if there was improvement, if not then consider banding. From my researcy it seems to me, that the earlier you start banding the better. However, I do not want to put her or my family through unnecessary stresses if not needed. We will have to drive 2 1/2 - 3 hours each way to get to cranial tech, which would mean 5 -6 hours in the car each week with 3 kids. Does repositioning work? I should note that I had noticed the flattening at 2 months and had been working on repositioning before the 4 month visit. The pediatrician said a lot can happen between 4 -6 months. She has good symmetry on her face, and her left ear is just a little forward but I didn't notice it until the doctor pointed it out.

Thanks,

I've asked on this forum if anyone saw repositioning or nature round out a flat head and not a single person had ever experienced it or seen it. I'd get the helmet now and you could be done with it in less time and less effort than trying repositioning.

I also think the only way repositioning has a chance is if you put constant pressure on the high spot, like the helmet does. We took our daughter off the back of her head altogether and no change ever happened to the shape. Her head got bigger, but the shape stayed exactly the same in the 2 months between 4 and 6 months.

Now, we are into our 4th month of wearing the helmet and I just wish I hadn't listened to everyone who say we could wait, there was plenty of time. They don't have to live with the helmet for 4 months when it could have been 6 weeks to 2 months instead.

Look in the photo section, there are before and after repo pics.

Sorry noone responded to you but there have been ppl who had change

with repo. However in my 3 yrs on the group that has only been maybe

a half dozen babies and it takes a lot of dedication

We banded at 6 months and have seen such a dramatic improvement in 4 weeks that we are now told the CT band will come off in 2-4 more weeks. Apparently, there is drastic head growth from 5-7 months. I would band ASAP so you can reduce the amount of band time! Since my son's situation happened inutero the repositioning did not work. We did have to go every week to get adjustments and now that we are approaching month 7 we will wait for two weeks. It is worth it so the process can end sooner!

I agree with .  I waited until my son was 6 months.  We noticed the plagio at around 4 months but I tried repositioning, but obviously it didn't work since we went with the helmet.  The upsetting part is that we missed his largest growth spurt between 4 and 6 months.  By the time he got the helmet at 6 months his head growth slowed considerably.  He could've already been out of the helmet, but now he'll probably be in it for another 6 months, which will make it a total of 11 months in a helmet!  Also, I've read that repositioning is more effective for babies younger than 3 months of age.

My personal recommendation would be to do repositioning along with alternative treatments. I think that the pressure on the head that needs to occur with repositioning is hard to accomplish. By doing the alternative treatments, you are releasing the part of the skull that is "stuck" in it's current shape so that the repositioning can work.

Obviously there are a few cases that have worked with repositioning alone, but not many. My personal belief is that this is because the skull bones get "stuck" with our babies. The helmet forces the shape to change, but the cranial work could help the bones release and naturally find their way back to the desired shape. The most effective time for doing this would also be prior to about 6 months since the skull is still so mallable at that point. That's why I would try this first. I suspect that some cases of helmets could be avoided, but not all, which is why I would recommend having everything set up to move right into a band if the repo and alternative treatments hadn't worked by 6 months.

In reality, 4 months in a band is nothing. We did 6 plus and would have done more. Now that she is nearly 3, it seems like such a small time period of her life. Babies with two doc bands do as much as 8 months and I've heard of even longer than that. It may not be 2 months, but 2 extra months is not significant when you add in the possibility that you may be able to go with 0 months. However, I probably wouldn't put my faith in repo and alt treatments alone past 6 months. You don't want to go much later before banding.

But, if you don't believe in them and don't want to go with the alternative treatments, you might not want to wait. Or, you will have to be super diligent in your repo efforts.

I have to agree. Especially with the ear asymmetry. It could mean jaw and

cheekbone asymmetry you just can't see yet. Nobody makes it clear at this stage

that it will take longer and give you less success if you wait. Yes, many people

get good results after 6 months, but many don't get as good results as they

could have if they'd had the chance to band at 4. Besides waiting until the 6

month visits may mean not getting the helmet until 7 months or later if you have

to wait for appointments and insurance clearance and specialists etc.

Ultimately, you are already stressing about it now, so waiting won't necessarily

reduce that. Getting it underway might.

Personally, I would not wait. My son was 17 months when he got the DOC band. Every Dr he saw including his pediatrician said "it will be fine" and "it will round out on it's own". It never happened. Because of the plagio and torticollis, his eyes and ears are asymmetrical. I wish I would have done the repositioning at 6mo when I originally went to Childrens Hospital. Most likely it will only get worse. 6 mo is not too early. It’s the prefect age and it will work faster since his head is softer and easier to mold. I regret every day that I waited. I was basically in denial and did not want to see the problem. They will not usually put a helmet on a child 18 months of age or older because chances are it will not help. Don't wait too long! My son will be 18mo this week and this will be his 3rd week in the DOC band. we should get the mold of his head back this week and see if there is any improvement.

Good luck
