Guest guest
Tracey, First, let me say that I would really like to talk to you off list about the Valtrex as we will be starting it next week. Please email me privately, so I can get more details on your personal experience. Secondly, I think that you're right to do SCD. Valtrex can cause a lot of flare up with yeast and harmful microbes in the gut, and SCD can combat that for your son. I just finished watching Stan Kurtz's presentation from this summer's DAN conference on his newest research which involves Valtrex. He absolutely feels that SCD should go along with that treatment, but mentioned that sometimes even SCD isn't enough to keep away the harmful bacteria and yeast when doing antiviral medications. So, start with SCD, but you may have to add in some natural antifungals like grapefruit seed extract, oil of oregano, and others. If that doesn't work, you can get a prescription antifungal as a last resort. I only mention that because I would hate for you to give up on SCD thinking that it wasn't working. It will definitely help your child's gut to heal...which in turn helps his brain to heal. So, about the hunger strike...I'd encourage you to read through some of the pecan bread files. Several families have had children go on strike, and I believe the record is nine days thus far. As long as your child is consuming fluids, then wait it out. He is counting on you caving in because he is addicted to these foods. Just really, really make sure that everything that he eats and drinks is SCD legal. Also, check any supplements and medications to get as many of them in a legal form as possible. Valtrex can't be compounded into SCD legal form, but many meds can. I'm looking forward to talking with you about the Valtrex. Meleah SCD 05/06 iel 3.5yrs. ASD, Ethan 5yrs., Mark 19mths., both NT new here... please help. hello all. so, here's the story... my son, nick (5yrs old) was diagnosed with moderate autism a little over 2 years ago. since then, we've been traveling down the road of biomedical interventions. the 1st one we did was houston's enzyme trio as an alternative to the GFCF or SCD. we saw remarkable results. he began to speak again shortly after beginning them. without remembering the exact order of the supplements i'm about to list, he started brainchild's minerals, td-dmps (not now), yeast treatments, probiotics, LDN, and now valtrex. he has made enormous gains with the valtrex. i am feeling good about all of nick's progress. it's been amazing. but something's just not right. while he lost a lot of the purple that was under his eyes, he still has rings. this leads me to believe it could be a food allergy. so,i decided to give the SCD a try again (we tried it 2 years ago with no luck. nick starved himself for 2 days. wouldn't eat a thing so i gave in). i made him teh midas waffles tonight since nick has an extremely limited diet (shocker). he only eats soft pretzels, waffles, oj, propel, milk, and sometimes french fries. horrific, i know. so, i had hoped to ween him into the diet. i made the waffles but put his usual syrup on them. i figured i would trasition to honey on them once i was able to get him to eat the waffles with the syrup first. he put the first piece in his mouth, chewed a few times, and gagged. he finally, through tears, chocked it down but absolutely refused to eat anymore. he became angry and upset. ugh. what dod i do? PLEASE TELL ME. I DON'T CARE IF YOU THINK IT WILL UPSET ME. WHAT DO I DO? i'm worried that he needs this diet. but he's already so thin. i can't bear starving him again if he's not even going to eat at the end. what should i do???? please, please help. thank you in advance, tracey

WHAT DO I DO? >> Sometimes what might be best is not to try at first to imitate the foods a child normally eats but do a complete " 180° " and give him other legal foods that he normally wouldn't eat. The texture and flavour of the SCD baked goods is very different even if you get a very fine grind of nut flour. Many children who eat only a few starchy items PreSCD often won't touch the baked goods for a while. Once they start starving out the harmful microbes and start to " forget " about the texture of the illegals like waffles etc. they may become more receptive to SCD versions of their old favorite foods. Some kids don't just sticking to simpler fare of meats , cooked fruits and veggies etc.. One thing that will help the texture of the baked goods is starting with nut butters over nut flours. Nut flours will not work in every recipe but are okay in most. The peanut butter cake recipe is a big hit for many. Almost any nut butter can be substitued in this recipe and peanut butter doesn't seem to be a good " nut " butter to start with (peanuts aren't really nuts anyway). If you do try an almond butter for baked goods try to either find a blanched (blonde) almond butter that is made without the tough (difficult to digest) almond skins. Almond butter made with skins has lots of little dark specs throughout it.
