Guest guest
Dear Group, I have been on Oxycontin for about three months now. They've had to increase it several times and just taking that is not helping. When I first started taking it I had some Percocet 10/650mg. left over and would take 1/2 to 1 pill for breakthrough pain and it helped out a lot. I know there are no medications that will take away my pain all togeather. My doctor is trying to get me off all the meds. that contain Tylenol. Should I ask him about putting me back on the Percocet? Before he put me on Oxycontin I was taking that Percocet and Tylenol #4. I would think now that I'm off the Tylenol #4 that the Tylenol intake is considerably lower now. Do'es anyone have any thoughts on this? Also keep me in your prayers on Wednesday, Dec.8th, I' having my second porta cath put in. This is supposed to be same day surgery like before. Thank You, Janet
Guest guest
Janet, Has your doctor tried any other long acting meds like the duragesic patch? I ask this because I was taking Oxycontin for a while last year, and it never did help that much with my pain. We increased it several times, and it still wasn't cutting it. I'd been on the patch before, but my doctor wanted to try something different, when the 50 mgs. patch didn't seem to be working that well. So he tried me on Oxycontin. I tried it, and even had it increased, and was still having long bouts of breakthrough pain, and ended up taking so much Percocet that my GI doctor finally gave up and sent me to a Pain Management doctor. He, too wanted me off anything with Tylenol, as I'd been taking Percocet for two years and he said that was too much and I needed to stay away from it. The PM doctor reviewed my whole list of meds, and put me back on the duragesic patch, at a higher strength of 75 mgs. We tried several combinations of BT meds, morphine, oxycontin IR, and then oxycodone, until we came up with the right combination. What I use now is a 75 mg. Duragesic patch for 48 hours, with oxycodone 10 mgs., up to 3 times a day, for BT. This might be something you could try. Also, I noticed that you were on Percocet 10/650's, did you know that you can get them as a 10/325, with half the amount of Tylenol? I'm surprised your doctor didn't know this, especially if he's wanting to reduce your use of Tylenol. The script has to be written specifically for " Percocet 10/325 " , otherwise the pharmacist is required to fill it with the 10/650's. Why don't you see if you could use the duragesic patch instead of the Oxycontin, if the Oxycontin's just not working that well? I've been on the patch for two years now and personally think it's a life saver for me. I seldom even need my BT meds, usually only taking them once or twice a week. And there are other short acting meds, like Oxycontin IR, morphine or oxycodone, that you can take, and none of those have any Tylenol. I found that, for me, the oxycodone works the best. You asked for ideas, and that's the best that I could come up with. Let us know if your doctor would consider this option. I am so happy with this particular combination, and am functioning better with this than anything else. I will keep you in my prayers for Wednesday. Having just gone through that " same day surgery " business with my tooth extractions, I know how it feels. You can't help but feel some apprehension any time you submit to meds that put you out. It's always scary. I'll pray that everything will go smoothly and you will not experience any problems. Take care, and please let us know how everything went. Guest guest
Janet, If you think percocet is the way to go, ask your doctor for straight oxycodone. That is " percocet " without the tylenol part. That way you don't have to worry about taking too much tylenol and damaging your liver. I take the plain oxycodone in capsule form but I know that you can get it in tablets too that can be cut in half if desired. Laurie
