Guest guest
Kris, I think you are right. If they had just hit you with the 100 mg of demerol as soon as you woke up from surgery, you would have gotten relief sooner and it would have lasted longer. That's what they have found with me even in the ER with panc attacks. At the hospital I like, they typically give me dilaudid. I think the doctor writes for me to be given 2-4 mg, but it might be just 1-2 mg - I'm not that familar with dilaudid. Anyway, the nurses have found that they need to every give the whole amount at ounce or at least give the second half within 10-15 minutes to get my pain under control. Once it is under control, it doesn't take as much to keep it under control, unless they make me go too long without more med. You are so right, that the nurses probably knew nothing about chronic panc - very few do know about it. The good nurses and doctors will ask the patient what is best for them and truly listen to what the patient tells them. Unfortunately, not all doctors and nurses have enough self confidence to understand they cannot know everything about every illness and just because the patient may know more than they do about their particular illness (es) is not a reflection on them. My local pcp doesn't hesitate to tell me, " you tell me what is the best approach because I know you know more about _____ than I do.
