UNOS.

Thank you for visiting www.transplantliving.org.  Congratulations on

receiving your gift of life - I hope you are doing well and continue to

do so.  Please thank your sister and friend for wanting to be organ

donors at the time of their death.

UNOS has no directed donation policy.  Directed donation is the

specification of a transplant candidate by an organ donor to whom the

donor wants his organ/organs donated at the time of his death.  Donors

and/or donor families can specify transplant recipients.

It is specifically permitted under most state laws governing anatomical

gifts. Of course, to receive a directed donation the recipient would

have to be formally accepted for a transplant by a transplant center and

would have to be medically compatible (blood type, size, etc.) with the

donor. 

Your local organ procurement organization (OPO) would be able to tell

you if your state recognizes directed donation.  OPO contact information

can be found if you revisit our site under Community/Member Directory.
