Guest guest
Ok, sorry for the delay in getting back but we have had this HORRIBLE virus (maybe rotavirus) run through our family the past 8 days that has been pure HELL! So, YES, it was a virus (maybe some die-off too) but it had my husband and young daughter vomiting and having horrible " blow-out " diarrhea right around Christmas (Merry Christmas!). Ugh, what a horrible holiday. :-( Everyone got better by yesterday except for Ben, whose virus turned into a cold/flu with this new horrible cough when he is in bed at night. While he was so horribly sick and vomiting, I couldn't give him meat patties, or any other intro food, so we gave in after day 5 with no food at all and gave him rice crackers and bananas. He was screaming for food, and I was not going to starve my poor, sick child. The intro was not going well anyway, as he won't eat meats anymore (got tired of them from before), won't touch cooked fruit (texture issues), won't eat jello (texture issues), won't eat hot liquids (soups, etc), can't digest nuts in ANY form, can't have dairy (or goat's milk...we tried), or ANY eggs, and " crazy " stimming behavior and violent tantrums with bananas apparently. He now " cries " for bananas, a really BAD sign. His behavior has been very " on edge " and more tantrums since the bananas and rice were added in 3 days ago. HOWEVER, there has been MAJOR improvement in those same three days, especially last night, when he actually ASKED for food! Several different things, but directly to me. So, I am even more confused. After our initial intro diet a month ago, we got formed stool on day 3 - day 5, then never again. He absolutely cannot digest ANYTHING besides the broiled meat patties. So, how on earth am I going to continue this diet? I know the diet has been doing great things for him, when he would eat the meat patties, and even during the continued diarhea (the rest of the first month), but if we are going to have the diarhea regardless, then why do the diet? I mean really, WHY? If the gut is not digesting ANYTHING, then why give all the nuts, etc. that he can't digest when he could be doing the same thing with say, tapioca flour, and be much happier? UGH!!! I am just SO frustrated, with no help locally. I can't seem to find a dietician that knows the diet here that is local, so I am ready to give up. I work so hard for this diet, and he still has the horrible stools and gut pains. We are waitig to get back the tests that will tell us which antifungal would be the best, as well as antivirals, so we plan to start those as soon as we have the information we need. And maybe with the horrible shape that Ben's gut is in, that those will be the answer to helping this diet work better for him. Does anyone have any thoughts, suggestions? Thanks - (mom to Ben, 3 1/2 ASD) > > This *could* be die-off.... or a virus.... or both (lucky you! ). I have not heard of it being used to " eat yeast " , but maybe others know more about that. I'm not entirely sure the Florastor product is completely SCD legal.... it was really hard, from their website, to find out what other ingredients were in it. You'd have to read the actual product label to make sure. > > Patti > > > > Re-started Intro on Week 4 - Vomiting, Runs & Mucus? > > > We restarted the intro diet, as our son still has the loose stools, > even after removing the almonds, cashews and nut flours. Guest guest
<<so we gave in after day 5 with no food at all and gave him rice crackers and bananas.>> Ohhhhh...... too bad it could not just have been ripe bananas, and not the rice crackers. If you had made any progress toward killing off bad guys in his gut, this may have undermined your efforts. Ripe banana was actually included on the original diet invented by Dr. Haas, so that would have been okay. But... you're saying that the bananas are causing him problems now? I'm really confused about the rest of your post. You're saying he " can't digest " anything except meat? Do you mean that EVERYthing else but meat gives him diarrhea? Even before this viral illness hit?? I imagine a kid with a really badly damaged gut will have problems digesting a lot of things, but we can work around some of those picky sensory issues. Will he accept something like a smoothie..... something cold? How about coconut milk....... have you ever tried it? It sounds to me like you need to get some private counseling help. SCD counselors can work with you by phone.... check pecanbread.com. Patti Re: UPDATE: Re-started Intro - Vomiting, Runs & Mucus?
