You can find ajwan (or ajwain) seed in your local indian supermarket - or

you could try a middle-eastern store as well, but most likely an indian

supermarket will have it (that's where I get mine).

If you can't find it, use dried thyme instead. Ajwan tastes somewhat similar

to thyme, though it is MUCH stronger and can easily overpower a dish. So, if

a recipe calls for 1/4 tsp ajwan seeds, you can safely sub. with 1/4 or even

1/2 tsp thyme (depending on your preference).

Soup sounds delicious - indulge! :)

adjowan seed?

I have a soup recipe that calls for this ingredient. I went to our

local Home Economist (who carries lots of spices) they don't carry it

or know what it is. Does anyone know where I can get this? I had

planned on getting this tonight. Do you think it can be omitted or

something else used in it's place? It's Tomato, Spinach & Lentil Soup

(pg. 72) in the grain-free gourmet cookbook.

Thanks for your help!

Have you tried Reid's Fine Foods in uptown? I believe it is on South Blvd.

Call to ask if they have it. Make sure you tell them the name and what it is in

case whoever you're speaking with hasn't heard of it and just says no. They

carry lots of unusual things. If it is a Latin spice, you've got the little

tienda by The Bakery Shop and the one on 115 near Ramma Church. If it's

Italian, there's Ferrucci's at Exit 28 in Shops on the Green shopping center.
