Thank you Mimi, Crystal and Meleah for your responses.

I guess my husband and I have to decide soon on

giving the Prevacid for 3 weeks to find out if

the rasping and hacking are reflux related. We will

hold off on the Periactin and Duocal indefinitely.

initially lost weight on scd but has gained it

back and is holding his own. I figure 's slow but

steady increase in appetite on scd is best for him.

If we increase the appetite artificially, couldn't

that overload his gut and cause damage? The Periactin

is an antihistamine which has a side effect of

increasing appetite so that's why the doctor thought

it might help.

I've been concerned about what all that Zantac did to

's gut when he was an infant. And last night

onCNN they did a report on how people who take

antacids - 1 pill/day for 1 year (the proton pump

inhibitor kind) like Zantac, Prevacid, etc. had a

major risk of hip fracture. If you could see s'

limbs--so very thin and frail. The report mentioned

the possibility that the mechanism which stops acids

from forming in the intestines also inhibits calcium

from getting into the bones. If we do the Prevacid,

how long term might the damage to his flora be? What

can we do to minimize damage?

Crystal-does your child suffer from reflux still?

What have you tried? We have been giving smaller,

more frequent meals and have tried giving fluids in

between solid feeds. We have his bed up at an angle.

Non of this has seemed to be of significant help,

although he now asks us to keep his bed tilted up.

What has worked for you? Would you email me

privately?

Meleah-we have kept ph at stage 2. The other two

children are barely stage 3 (just some cooked,

strained, pureed berries in their popsicles and the

pecan butter i have used for baking I'm starting to

make a little less creamy). I wonder if the

probiotics are not agreeing with him (Kirkman's

acidoph). I broke open a capsule yesterday and tasted

it and it was very fine, yet hard grains. This comes

out in phs stool almost all the time. Maybe I

should decrease the amount for him?

Mimi-I'm considering trying goat yogurt but I'm just

getting a handle on keeping them fed! The yogurt seems

pretty complicated and I have so little time to

interact with the children anymore since I spend so

much time in the kitchen.

We can get certified manuka honey at Whole Foods--(it

is active 12+) so not as potent as the one Crystal

tried. Can the pylori be the cause of the reflux?

The protocol for getting rid of pylori would include

antacids so if we get him tested soon and he needs

that then I guess we wouldn't do the Prevacid. Ugh.

Thanks to each of you-
