Re: facial flattening from band sideburn

I'm not sure I understand how this is happening. If you look at the shape of the

band is it flat on the inside on the left side of her head?

Her head should take the shape of her band - and her band's shape should be a

desirable shape. If the band doesn't look right then it should be remade. I

believe the way it is made is they make a cast of your child's head based on a

computer scan then they correct that head by adding additional material to make

a desirable head shape for your child. The altered head is then used to make the

band. At least this is how ours was done 5 yrs ago. I would talk to your ortho

about your concerns and ask him if a new band can be made. If he just says

" don't worry about it, it will get better on it's own " I wouldn't keep the band

on. Also if he has a scanner get him to overlay the 3d images on the computer

and see if the left side really is flattening.

weeks and we are noticing that the side with the velcro which is her left side

is starting to flatten her head and face on that side. When she first got the

band, the left sideburn was much tighter than the right and we had it adjusted

twice, but the ortho said it was okay because it wasn't leaving a red mark or

anything on her face. We are debating just taking the band off and being done

with it, because we don't want to risk her face being deformed for the sake of a

round head in the back. Has anyone had this or have any advice? She is 8 months

now. Thanks!

oops, I should have read the subject line :-) now I get what you're saying. See

if the sideburns can be trimmed so they aren't so long and aren't putting

pressure on the face as much.

I have to comment on this post, as my son suffered definite facial deformity

from the Starband. While I am not commenting against all Starbands, I do

believe that ours was made incorrectly and on top of that, the orthotist had no

idea what he was doing. After using the Starband for 3 months, not only was the

side of his face indented (almost in the shape of a C) due to the poor fit, but

his plagio had actually gotten worse. I was devestated. Thankfully we had the

ability to fly from Ohio to North Carolina to get the DOC Band which helped to

fix my son's face. I will gladly send pictures if you're curious about how this

looked.

Again, I don't want to dissuade anyone from using the Starband, but I do

recommend paying close attention to fit.

We are currently experiencing the same issue with our 7 month old son in a star band. He has been treated for 7 weeks. The back of his head looks great and made drastic improvements in that time period, However, I honestly, have not been happy with the fit.

The othotists continue to disregard my concerns about the helmet. I also believe that it was not made correctly. IT has always shifted to one side and it fits really tight on his sideburns . A few weeks ago, I mentioned that I thought that it was causing his face to look distorted because it spins to left,( velcro is on right and very thight side burn on this side) and it looks like his right cheek area is being pushed in looks like backwards c shape slightly. They say that it is not causing his face to look that way. They blame it on the fact that he came in with facial assemetry. Yes, he did come in with facial assemetry but, not with what he currently has due to his helmet putting pressure on his face. Our facial assemtry was with the ear allignment and left front side of head was higher than right due to plagio on back left of his head.

We have ALWAYS had an issue with the helmet fitting crooked. It shifts to the left. His helmet is very close to his right eye and sometimes pushes on the back of his right ear and it pushes on the front of the left ear. I just keep feeling like I don't know what to do. Should we continue to treat or should we bite the bullet and take him to cranial tech and pay out of pocket??? The point of having him in a band is because of his plagio and to fix his head, not make it worse in other ways????

I just think its funny how when you first get the helmet and they tell what to look out for and then when you go in with a poor fit, they disregard your concerns. They have also been shaving alot out of his helmet lately, without better results on the fit. I think they are trying to shave it out so we outgrow it and have to get another helmet. One that actually fits.

Anyone else have these issues with Dallas Starband?

Hi ,

I don't know if I asked before but if you're comfortable telling me I would like

to know which location you used. That way if someone asks about it in the future

we can tell them about your concerns. If you prefer to email me instead of

posting to the group that is fine too.
