Guest guest
It seems like this was about the same time our daughter had similar issues with her starband helmet (she's now 3 months in and almost at our optimal results). I know it is extremely frustrating and the multiple visits are agonizing - but keep going back until you are satisfied with the fit. I agree that you know best. We ultimately did talk to another Othotist in the practice and I don't think it helped much - the only thing that helped was to keep going back until satisfied. They also added padding (which had a spongy feel - less slip to the bottom of the neckline - which seemed to help with the rotation. Another idea is maybe it's time for some measurements - with the starband you can get new scan to see the improvement (not sure with Hanger). Just suggestiong that maybe the measurements will be helpful - because they take out some of the subjectivity and show progress or lack of progress. Hang in there!!! > > Our son Connor was fitted for a Hanger helmet 7 weeks ago and we have felt like it doesn't fit right since day one. We have been back to the orthotist on five occasions. Three were for scheduled visits and two were because we felt like the helmet was pushing to hard on this ears and eye. Every time we visit she tells us that the helmet is right, but that it is rotating and she just has to add another pad to stop the rotation. There are now 4 locations that have pads in this helmet and we are concerned that it is not working correctly. > > The most frustrating part is that she is the only person to talk to and she keeps saying that it is not pushing on his eye or ears, when we can clearly see that it is. I have attached pictures to find out if anyone agrees or disagrees with us. I don't know if we need to go to a new facility or just trust this person. She says that she is the number 2 person in all of Hanger to do the volume of helmets that she does. Also now it looks like the front pad is pushing in on his eye and he is getting a bulge over his left ear. Guest guest
The helmet looks like it DOES NOT fit your son correctly. It appears to be pushing his left ear forward, possibly deforming it. The left side of his face looks almost bruised. I am surprised that there aren't any red spots there. My son wore a DOC Band, and they don't use padding at all. The band fit him correctly from the start. It concerns me whenever I hear about orthos adding padding. I feel as though the fit must not be great in the first place if additional foam and or padding keeps being added. How can a band be effective if it keeps getting modified with additional padding or foam? It seems more like guess work, altering the original custom fit, made from the scan or cast of a baby's head. I would switch orthos, as I don't feel that you are in the best hands with your current one. I'm not even sure if your son's band can ever be adjusted to fit right. You may need to insist that it be remade, free of charge. Have you noticed any improvement in your son's head shape during the 7 weeks he's been in the helmet? Do you have a Cranial Technologies anywhere near you? > > Our son Connor was fitted for a Hanger helmet 7 weeks ago and we have felt like it doesn't fit right since day one. Guest guest
It is a little hard to comment on the fit of the Connor's helmet, because I 've never dealt with a Hanger helmet. I have to agree though, it looks like it doesn't fit well. At least the way it pushes on your child's ears looks bad to me! Does the helmet make his ears stick out like that full time when it is on? I hope parents who actually used a Hanger helmet can provide more insight. > > Our son Connor was fitted for a Hanger helmet 7 weeks ago and we have felt like it doesn't fit right since day one. Guest guest
, It is frustrating when the experts are telling you the opposite of what your gut is telling you. I think you should seriously consider taking Connor somewhere else for a band fitting. I went down this exact road with Hangar in 2006 with my daughter. They insisted that the band was a good fit, but I could see it obviously wasn't, with the bright red marks it left at various spots on her head. They implemented the same fixes for her... inserting additional padding... which only made the fit worse. At one point the helmet was causing so much pressure that she started vomiting before we even got home from the fitting. I wanted to rip the band off and throw it out the car window. I was MAD that they obviously weren't qualified to fit these bands. If their scan is so accurate then why does the band need padding in the first place? isn't it supposed to be customized to the scan? After 3 or so months of worrying and questioning, I was fed up. I took Allie to Dallas to Cranial Technologies and can I just say the experience there was awesome by comparison. Wow, these people really know their stuff. The docBand was a perfect fit from day one, and we never had an issue with any of the adjustments. Allie was already 13 months by the time she received her DocBand, and we knew the results would have been better had we started earlier, but we did the best we could with the time we had. In the end we were very pleased with the results. I wish you all the best with whatever you decide, but as a parent you really have to trust your instincts when it comes to your child! > > Our son Connor was fitted for a Hanger helmet 7 weeks ago and we have felt like it doesn't fit right since day one. Guest guest
The pictures you posted remind me so much of another little boy “ â€. His mom (Holly) was active on this board about a year ago or so and first got him fitted with a Starband and the band was pushing on her son’s ear the same way it does on yours. It was also not sitting properly on his head. She ended up driving a long distance to Cranial Tech and got him fitted for a DOC band instead and the difference was like night and day. I understand that driving to a CT location might not be an option for you but I’d demand the band to be remade now. The padding that was added is ridiculous, in my opinion and an ill-fitting band can cause damage if left on for too long. If CT is not an option in your area, check and see if you have a STARband location. If the Hanger place doesn’t want to make a new helmet for free, then I’d ask for a refund. Guest guest
I'm sorry, I just can't get over the padding that they added. For God's sake, if that was effective we could all go buy bike helmets and glue in some felt and we would save ourselves a lot of hassel and money. That is just too much. > > Our son Connor was fitted for a Hanger helmet 7 weeks ago and we have felt like it doesn't fit right since day one. We have been back to the orthotist on five occasions. Guest guest
Thank you everyone for your comments. We have an appt for 8 am tomorrow to meet with them and find out measurements. We now have a full head of steam going into this meeting knowing that we are not the only ones who think that it is not working correctly. We are going to see if they will make a new band or refund our money so that we can someplace else. We are in San , TX and we had decided that we would go with the Doc band in Austin before we started. Then we met with the Neuro Surgeon and she was totally against the Doc band. She felt there was no reason to drive 2 hours every other week when there are " as good solutions here in San . " When I brought up that I had heard that it used a little different technology and could work faster, she replied " according to them. That is just good marketing for you. " So we listened to her and went with Hanger here in town. I will be letting her know about this as well!! > > > > Our son Connor was fitted for a Hanger helmet 7 weeks ago and we have felt like it doesn't fit right since day one. What bothers me about these particular professionals is that they clearly aren't up to date on their plagio and brachy education. They tend to downplay the severity of the condition and are notoriously anti-banding. Now we have one that is, " totally against the DOC Band. " My advice to anyone new, would be to avoid seeing a neurosurgeon unless synostosis is suspected. Otherwise, I would head directly to Cranial Tech. If that isn't an option for you, I would research for an ortho who is actually qualified to fit bands.

Guest guest
, When I was starting the band process I was told as well that all bands work the same....After trying a local helmet for about 6 months we switched to Doc Band. I actually liked our first ortho and we never had terrible fit issues, but for whatever reason it just didn't fix my child's head. Now we fly to Chicago every two weeks and I am so much happier with my baby's head and with the Doc Band. The biggest regret I have is that I stayed with the first ortho for as long as I did. There was progress, so I just kept on waiting for the head to start looking normal. It never happened:( I just want to add that I didn't ' quit' our firt band, it was our ortho who was ready to be done with us and we are on our 2nd Doc Band now. Good Luck with everything! Then we met with the Neuro Surgeon and she was > totally against the Doc band. She felt there was no reason to drive 2 hours > every other week when there are " as good solutions here in San . Guest guest
My son had a Hanger helmet and never had any padding added to the helmet, it fit well from the beginning. The fit of your sons helmet does NOT LOOK RIGHT to me. I could see if they just added a tiny but of foam to help stop some movement, but the amount of padding they had to add is rediculous. Of course I am an not an expert and do not know yours sons condition, however I would advise trying to get the helmet REMADE. Especially after 7 weeks!! he certainly should have " grown into " any roatation by now and not needed any padding. Its unfortunate if that is the only orthotist there, I might consider going to a different place at this point if they dont make a new helemt and/or if the new on does not fit perfectly fine from the beginning! best of luck! le 11 mos Hanger grad > > Our son Connor was fitted for a Hanger helmet 7 weeks ago and we have felt like it doesn't fit right since day one. Guest guest
I am having the same problem with rotation of the helmet and adding pads. My son has had growth and has been in the helmet for 3 months but still the helmet rotates and I feel it just doesn't fit right but the orhtodist says differently and now he is saying we will probably need a new helmet because he will soon outgrow it (but then why does it still rotate??). Guest guest
My Hanger helemt was very loose At the check up appt they finally put a bunch of padding in the back. It still is in the way of one eye but not the other. Doesn't seemto bother her but it bothers me and he made no mention of it. I would recommend her without reservation 100%. She is great with the babies, great with bands, is very professional, and seems very genuine and caring with her patients. We have been with her for 7 months now, and my 11 month old loves going to see her. Guest guest
Hello, My daughter is about two weeks into her Hanger helmet. On the day of her original fitting my wife and I did not know what to expect or what to look for as far as correct fitting goes. The next day we started her treatment and realized that pressure was being applied to her left eye as well. I knew the that was wrong but I gave it a couple hours to see if it was rubbing any other places. When we took it off there was a big red spot on her forhead and a rawspot on her cheek. I called back the next day to schedule a refitting and the man that fits the helmets was out of town for a week. We have since had a refitting and everything seems fine but we have had the helmet for two weeks and are still in the first few days of treatment because of "fitting problems". I have heard that it takes a while to get all the bugs worked out, but I understand your frustration. I had to be very aggressive about the changes I wanted made to the helmet to get the result I was looking for. They did not want to cut the opening for her face in the front any larger even though it was easy to see it was bunching up the skin around her eye. Sometimes you have to remind people who is writing the checks and who is providing the service. I made it very clear to the people at Hanger that "I am not a helmet expert and I am not a baby head expert, but I am a concerned dad that is trying to do what is best for my little girl and I dont think it would be best to round out the back of her head if it was going to mess up her eye." That seamed to get there attention and lead to the most informative conversation I have had with them since the first visit. I always try to be polite to people and thats usually the best way to get things done, but sometimes you have to be (assertive) to help them realize they are no better than you are. Do the best you can to figure out the changes that need to be made to the helmet (in your opinion) and tell the Hanger guy. If he does not agree ask for a reason and talk about it. The guy at my Hanger seamed to know what he was talking about, but remember they dont have the same investment in this helmet as you do. Not only the money, but also the end result that will effect our kids the rest of there life.
