I personally would say go with your gut and not the place. Both bands will do the exact same thing in the end...round out your child's head. Did CT say your daughter may need two bands? They are known for that and right there if insurance doesn't cover it your stuck paying over $7000 where Star Cranial will do it with just one band because their foam is thicker and will last longer. You may have a better feeling once you visit Star Cranial and then know in your heart which place to go with.

Good luck!

Hi, I'm new to the group. I just took my daughter this morning to Cranial Tech and they recommended treatment via the Doc Band. This center is out of network for my insurance and we do not know exactly how much insurance will pay (pay the usual and customary, etc.) our deductable is higher for out of network, while the in network deductable is lower and has been met. Then the co pay is 70/30. With the cost of $3800 we'd like to be a little more certain of what we'd be paying. I was told that the insurance could pay a rate of anywhere from $1700 to the full price but nothing is for sure. So, worse case scenario, we'd be paying the full $3800.The Star Cranial Center is in network and I have an appointment for my daughter with them next week. I know that their contracted rate is $2515, if the insurance will pay it. And if insurance does not pay it, they would charge us the contract rate of $2515. As indicated, our in network deductable is

already paid and we have a 90/10 co pay if coverage. So, my question surrounds experience with Cranial Tech in Dallas, TX and Star Cranial Center in Dallas and your opinion of the Doc Band by Cranial Tech and the Star band? As far as money goes, the Starband is the best as it is in network for our insurance. However, I want what is best for my daughter. So, I don't mind paying for the Doc Band if it's better. Hi - I am in the same exact boat as you! I'm in Dallas and went to Cranial Tech and Star Cranial Center of Excellence. Cranial Tech was out of network and our insurance would pay the UCR at $700 for Cranial Tech, but I did get the deductible as in-network. I would still be out of pocket $2800 with the DocBand. We are in-network with Star Cranial so it only cost us $346 (we had about $100 deductible left to meet). I found Star Cranial Center of Excellence through a mom at our daycare and her son went there and she was very pleased with the results - she has completed treatment already. I did a consult there and really liked them better than Cranial Tech - even aside for the money reasoning. We just got our band last week from Star Cranial and so far so good. I read so much about each band and could not see how one place could for certain say they were better than the other. Each band is FDA approved, each place only does baby helmets, each place has trained technicians, etc. We are in-network with Star Cranial so it only cost us $346 (we had about $100 deductible left to meet). What I liked better about Star Cranial - it's setup more like a doctor's office. They have diaper changing stations and Diaper Genie's in each room - did not have this experience at CT and

happened to have a blow out at our initial consult appt. Star Center are trained othotists, which the more I read about, the more I felt comfortable with this training over PT training for my DD (which is more likely what CT techs are from what I have read). We did not have torticollis (sp?) so didn't feel PT or OT would benefit our situation and felt the Orthotist was a better fit for us. Star Cranial has their degrees and certifications all over the wall, so I didn't have to ask for credentials, and the person fitting us has done orthotics for 20 years or so - and has just done baby helmets for the past 3 years IIRC. It turned out that I was more comfortable there as well. My doctor did have to write a prescription and a letter of medical necessity - no problem. The only thing I've struggled with is that i have to make alot of followup phone calls to make sure things get done - so just keep that in mind. If

they need a script, call them and the drs. office to make sure everyone has received the paperwork and is responding to the request. I don't know if it was my pedi's office or Star Cranial that was the communication gap, but regardless, once I stayed on top of it then things got done. As far as the insurance goes, CT will have their person call you in 4-5 days with the exact amount you will pay them and what your insurance UCR is estimated to be. For example, I would pay in full up front to CT $3500 and they estimated my insurance UCR to be $700. I called my insurance and they can't tell you what the UCR is, but did agree with CT's payment process (to pay up front to CT and deal with insurance on our own for the UCR rate - however, they did say the band was covered under the in-network deductible, but in the end it didn't matter since we'd still be out the same amount of money). I called my insurance before visiting

Star Cranial and they could look up the location and tell me that Star Cranial was in-network and that the band was covered - the band is an S1040 code I think. I can find out for sure if you want me to. We have Empire BC/BS - your insurance might be able to do the same if you call them. Let me know if you have any questions - I'll be happy to answer them! Good luck! From: shelles1908 <shelles08@...>Subject: New to group - Star Band or Doc BandPlagiocephaly Date: Thursday, August 5, 2010, 1:52 PM

Forgot this detail and I totally agree. DocBand has a 4 month shelf life and we would more than likely have 2 bands (they didn't tell me that at CT - but from their assessment of our head and what I've read, this would be a strong possibility for us). With them being out of network it would be $5600 out of pocket or more. StarBand has a 6 month shelf life and we will only be in 1 band. If the off chance we need 2 bands that would still only be around $600 or so.

Thank you so much! This inormation was really helpful because I started stressing out. Clearly I want what is best for my daughter, but want to be able to make an informed decision. So that's great to hear from you, since you are in the exact same situation. Cranial Tech did tell me we'd pay up front and then they'd send to the insurance, etc. etc.. And Star Cranial did tell me they were in network.

I do have a little more research to do on the two but this was very helpful. And now that you say it, Cranial Tech did have an occupational therapist look at my daughter, etc. So... I am happy to hear what you had at Star Cranial. If you don't mind my asking, can you give me the name of the Orthotist that fitted your child?  How does the fitting occur, do they have to make a mold?  How is your baby doing with the Starband?

Thank you again so much for your insight. This was very helpful. My husband told me to thank you for him also:)

Thanks again, I can't tell you how much your email has meant. We got to Star Cranial on Thursday, so I'm looking forward to that appointment.

Sincerely

Thanks! I was not told about a possibility of two bands at Cranial Tech. But

You are right, I will go to Star Cranial and then make a decision. Thank you so

much!

Hi - I just saw this e-mail. I don't know how I missed it - sorry :) I cannot remember her name - she is an older lady with short, curly reddish brown hair and glasses. I really like her - she seems very knowledgeable, answers all my questions and is very patient with me. At the fitting scan appointment, I even asked for print outs of my measurements and she had to go back to the beginning and print them for me - took about 5-10 minutes and she did not complain at all. We have not had an adjustment yet - we've only been to a one week followup. To fit the band they scan your baby's head in the Star Scanner (no mold taken). If your appointment was today you will know what I'm talking about. When you decide to do this and the insurance is approved, then you go back for a final scan. This is the scan that is

sent off to manufacture the helmet. After that you return 9-10 days later for the fitting. This takes a little over an hour for the first fitting appointment. At that point they shave it down so it sits correctly around the neck and ears. You have a run through on how to transition into wearing the helmet. This schedule is 1 hour on, 1 off for the first day - then 2 hours on, 1 hour off for the 2nd day, etc. until the 5th day you then start wearing it for 23 hours. She also has you put the helmet on and take it off so you are comfortable doing this. She'll go over cleaning instructions ( just wipe the inside down with alcohol ) and when to not wear it (due to fever, swimming, bathing, etc.). After this appointment you go back 1 week later. We've gone to this one and it was not adjusted - she basically just checked that things were going well and answered any questions. Then you go back in

2 weeks for another followup - we go to that next week. After this she said it was every 3-4 weeks. My daughter is doing great with her helmet. She has a very laid back personality so I think that helps. We had no sleep issues - she is a big sleeper (12 hours at night) and the first night with the helmet she slept fine. It is HOT, obviously, and the helmet starts smelling fast. I didn't bathe her one night and the next day I was sorry for skipping a night - I bathe her every night now just because they sweat so much. I also scrub the helmet down at least twice with alcohol each night. After the one day I haven't had a problem with the smell. If you are outside to run errands alot, you can take it off to dry the head and helmet - I highly recommend this for their comfort. We go to daycare so luckily she is inside in the a/c during the week and we only have to worry about outside on the

weekends. My older daughter wears her bike helmet all the time now to show her support :) She's 3 - it's cute :)Where ever you go - CT or Star, if you want the helmet wrapped at 360 wraps, be sure to sign up as soon as you start the process. I signed up the day we were scanned for the helmet and they can't get me in until September. Good luck - let me know if you have any more questions!

Update- we went to Star Cranial about a week ago and was very comfortable with

them as well as Cranial Tech. So, we are going to go with Star Cranial given

that we were just as comfortable and they are in network. They have now sent in

the predetermination to the insurance, so we are now waiting to see what the

insurance will pay. Either way, we are happy that we are finally getting this

process moving along.

Ok, so we are starting the insurance nightmare... Well, I'm not so sure it's a

nightmare yet. Star cranial sent the predetermination to the insurance and they

denied it until we could prove 2 months of failed conservative treatment

(repositioning, tummy time, etc). We've been doing these things since she was

born. So, our doctor is going to send yet another letter of medical necessity to

indicate we have discussed and have been repositioning and tummy time since

birth. We shall see what happens. Good thing, is she almost 5 months, so even if

we have to wait another month, she will only be 6 mths old.I just want to get

this show on the road.

for my insurance and we do not know exactly how much insurance will pay (pay the

usual and customary, etc.) our deductable is higher for out of network, while

the in network deductable is lower and has been met. Then the co pay is 70/30.

With the cost of $3800 we'd like to be a little more certain of what we'd be

paying. I was told that the insurance could pay a rate of anywhere from $1700 to

the full price but nothing is for sure. So, worse case scenario, we'd be paying

the full $3800.

daughter with them next week. I know that their contracted rate is $2515, if the

insurance will pay it. And if insurance does not pay it, they would charge us

the contract rate of $2515. As indicated, our in network deductable is already

paid and we have a 90/10 co pay if coverage.

> So, my question surrounds experience with Cranial Tech in Dallas, TX and Star

Cranial Center in Dallas and your opinion of the Doc Band by Cranial Tech and

the Star band? As far as money goes, the Starband is the best as it is in

network for our insurance. However, I want what is best for my daughter. So, I

don't mind paying for the Doc Band if it's better. Any opinions, suggestions on

the starband vs. docband?
