Guest guest
What should I expect to happen at our first appointment? They will take measurements for the band at the first appointment. Does the location that you are going to have the STARscanner? If so, the measurements shouldn't take long, just a matter of minutes. If they don't, they will do a plaster casting which can take longer (15-30 minutes). At this appointment you can also choose which colour you want the band to be. See the Orthomerica website for choices - http://www.orthomerica.com/pdf/transferguide.pdf How long will it be until they have a helmet made for her? The band should be fitted no later than two weeks after the first appointment. We got our band about 10 days after the first appointment. Some places are quicker and you can get it as soon as five business days later. How long has everyone had to wear their helmet for? We were told the same thing - 4-6 months in the band. My son ended up being in it for 4.5 months (he started the band when he was 6.5 months old). Can you really not get it wet? You really cannot get the band wet. The band liner is porous so any water will get absorbed into it. It might feel dry but it really isn't and then the water will slowly eek back out and cause skin problems with the moisture sealing against skin. We have a trip planned to a water park in 2 months, if I can't get it wet can I take it off for more than just an hour a day? If it's only going to be for a couple of days I don't think it will hurt to have it off more than one hour a day. I just wouldn't keep it off all day, every day. Is it horrible at first for them to sleep in it? Or do they usually not mind? Some kids take awhile to adjust, other kids have no problem. My son didn't sleep well the first couple of nights, but then It was suggested to me to get a piece of memory foam and put that on the mattress under the sheet to make the bed more comfortable and that worked and he slept much better. Hope this helps! Molly Novato, California Nicolas, 5, tort & plagio, STARband (CIRS Oakland) 4/24/06-9/12/06, Graduate! , 8 , 11 I'm new -First STARband apt. tomorrow Hi my name is . My daugher has plagiocephaly. She is 6 months old. She has had a flat spot since she was 1 month old, her dr. hoped it would improve once she got older, but it's gotten worse. We had an apointment at Children's Hospital where they told us that she needs to have a helmet because her measurements are pretty significant. So, we have our first appointment at the place for the STARband tomorrow. So, my question is, what should I expect to happen at our first apointment? How long will it be until they have a helmet made for her? We were told average time the child has to wear it is 4-6 months, but that our daughter would be on the closer to 6 month range based on what they observed (her flat spot is on the side of her head). How long has everyone had to wear their helmet for? Can you really not get it wet? We have a trip planned to a water park in 2 months, if I can't get it wet can I take it off for more than just an hour a day? I know they say to wear it for 23 hours, but will it really make that much of a difference if it's more than an hour a day for a few days? Is it horrible at first for them to sleep in it? Or do they usually not mind? Thanks ------------------------------------ For more plagio info
Guest guest
I have no idea if they have a STARscanner, from the looks of the casting photos I'm freaked out and I sure hope they have the scanner! Thank you for all the information and sending me the site for the color choices So, here is a question, if you do white foam for the inside, does it get dirty easy? Would it be smarter to get a colored foam for the inside? > > What should I expect to happen at our first appointment? > They will take measurements for the band at the first appointment. Guest guest
With the STATband the foam is only available in white. Orthomerica makes other prosthetic devices so that is what the colored foam is for, it's not applicable to the STARband. Here is a list of locations that have the STARscanner: http://www.orthomerica.com/technology/scan_locations.htm Molly On Mar 9, 2011, at 8:11 PM, " " <rhetland4@...> wrote: > I have no idea if they have a STARscanner, from the looks of the casting photos I'm freaked out and I sure hope they have the scanner! Guest guest
Don't worry!! Our son is on week 6 of his STARband and things are going well. In regards to scanning vs casting, our son had the scanning BUT the casting is much more accurate. We are on our 2nd helmet bc the first one didn't fit correctly. I now wish we'd had the casting. *A great friend of ours is an orthotist for Veterans and he said the casting is the only way to perfect an orthotic device. Hind site is always 20/20...Either way, don't worry!! You've got plenty of support here, hang in there mama!On Mar 9, 2011, at 11:11 PM, "" <rhetland4@...> wrote: I have no idea if they have a STARscanner, from the looks of the casting photos I'm freaked out and I sure hope they have the scanner! Guest guest
Thanks for the list. The place we are going to isn't listed as having a scanner Guess I'll have to try to prepare myself for the casting process today > >> > >> What should I expect to happen at our first appointment? > >> They will take measurements for the band at the first appointment. Guest guest
We had our first apt. today and they just took photo and did the measurements they actually gave us the option of getting the casting done or the scanning. They don't have the scanner where we were at though, but they said we could drive to Chicago to get it done (we live in WI), so we told them we would do that. I just can't sit there for that long with her getting the casting done. I'd be in tears to see her crying sitting through that. So, we are awaiting a call that our insurance approved it and then we'll be scheduling a trip to Chicago. The person today told us that they were both the same as far as accuracy?!? > > > > > > What should I expect to happen at our first appointment? > > > They will take measurements for the band at the first appointment.
