Guest guest
I cannot imagine a baby outgrowing a Hanger helmet in only 3 weeks, since I was under the impression that Hanger helmets and StarBands last longer than DOC Bands--up to six months. My DS outgrew his 1st DOC Band in 8 weeks and is currently in his 2nd. He mostly has brachy and his CI went from 100 to 92.2 and his CVA went from 6mm to 4mm. If the specialist at Stanford says he's at 97 (cephalic index) that's pretty severe brachycephaly (the 8 mm would likely be moderate plagio) and your son should probably get another helmet. Seven months is still young. Perhaps get another type of helmet. Have you been to Cranial Technologies? Is there one near you? Good luck! Robyn > > Ladies, > > We had a helmet for ds, starting 4m and he outgrew it in 3weeks! Hangar said after his 3weeks of wear he was considered *normal* at 5mm (from 10mm)...our ped thinks they are wrong and we went to a super specialist at Stanford who said he is at 8mm and 97, and they reco a helmet again to expodite the rounding process...has this happened to anyone? Our son is 7 months old now and we know this is all about timing and we are deciding whether or not on the helmet this week... > > We are furious at Hangar and think we had an incompetent service provider...has anyone outgrown a helmet in 3weeks? > > Would love your thoughts... > Oliver's Mom >
Guest guest
Hi, If you are in the Stanford area, I would definitely go with a Starband from CIRS in Palo Alto. This is who we use and they came highly recommended. -Kathy romantykrobyn wrote: I cannot imagine a baby outgrowing a Hanger helmet in only 3 weeks, since I was under the impression that Hanger helmets and StarBands last longer than DOC Bands--up to six months. Guest guest
I agree that it sounds like your Hanger technician is wrong. I don't think a Hanger helmet can be outgrown in 3 weeks - not even with a 4 month old. If there is foam left in the band, then it should have still fit. Is there someone that you can complain to higher up. Hanger is a larger organization with several offices so I should there that there would be. In the meantime, I wouldn't go back to Hanger. However, with those numbers, you do need another band and I would go with Kathy's recommendation. Guest guest
It does seem like 3 weeks is too soon to " outgrow " a helmet. Our son had a Hanger helmet and our orthotist said that once they get to 6mm or less that is considered normal, how ever while that may be true we chose to continue the band till he was at 3mm. MY son wore his helemt for 3 months and still had lots of foam to be shaved out, in fact hardly any was shaved out...so I am guessing you should have been able to get more use out of the one your child had. also there is the unlikely possibility your child had some regression depending how long the helmet has been off? either way, I would do the helemt again if the head shape is not satisfactory. If you had to pay for the Hanger helmet I would ask for a new one or a reimbursement if you choose to go elsewhere, since the end result was not satisfactory. good luck! le 9 mos Hanger Grad > > Ladies, > > We had a helmet for ds, starting 4m and he outgrew it in 3weeks! Guest guest
Hi Oliver's mom, My daughter's starting point for her starband was 4.5 mm of asymmetry and 96% CI. If you're at 5 mm you need to focus on the brachy (flatness in back and extra width). My daugher wore a starband from CIRS in Palo Alto and did very well. She wore it 5 mo (a long time) but got good correction. You can see her pictures at Our Plagio Babies S/Sydney M. Here is a link: Plagiocephaly/photos/album/1577428621/pic/16158696\ 44/view?picmode= & mode=tn & order=ordinal & start=41 & count=20 & dir=asc Your hanger ortho is out of his mind. I have heard of docbands being outgrown quickly, but never hanger. (docbands have thinner foam inside). I think he ordered the wrong size, or the people who made it messed up. You can go to CIRS for a consultation if you want. They can scan him with the starscanner. They will likely charge you for this, but may put it toward the cost of the band if you get one (ask about this). -christine sydney, 4 yrs, starband grad > > Ladies, > > We had a helmet for ds, starting 4m and he outgrew it in 3weeks!
