Guest guest
Hi Everyone, FYI - I just got my second notice in as many months from Children's Hospital in Boston and a greater than expected number of pts are colonized with a newly-described Burkholderia dolosa. Several new infection control practices have been instituted which include those who culture positive being seen on different clinic days and being hospitalized on different inpatient floors. There are also no longer any common waiting areas. Pts are brought to the exam room immediately upon arrival and all providers will see you in your room. Although this is specifically for Children's, I cannot imagine that this problem is unique to this hospital so I urge you all to use caution at your clinic appointments. I am so thankful that 4 of Shaelin's 5 weeks of antibiotics were done at home this past fall as this was prior to all of the new infection control practices when pts were just starting to be identified. At this point, he does not culture this bug, yeah! They went on to say that there is no firm evidence that one's clinical outcome will be worse if you colonize for this bacteria but they are taking no chances.
