Hi Gillian,

You're correct, spilling ketones happens when they are burning fat

directly as a fuel. The body uses sugar as it's first choice of

fuel, converts fats to a fuel as a second choice and the brain can

ONLY use sugar as a fuel so when our RSS/SGA kids are spilling

ketones, it means they have depleted the whole of their sugar supply

and the brain is now lacking all fuel supply, this is where some

damage could take place.

No brain can convert fat into fuel this is why we feel so awful

when we forget to eat a meal ourselves... foggy headed, tired, etc.

The brain is out of fuel.

Hope this makes it a little clearer and please ask if it isn't!
