Guest guest
I'm just curious as to what your toddler's day looks like in terms of food and drink. I was wondering what you feed for each meal, number of meals, times of meals, what they drink, how much and from what source (bottle, cup, etc). I am looking for new food ideas to give Dalia, keeping in mind that she STILL does not chew, but rather swallows everything...she is accepting much thicker foods with tiny pieces though, but if the chunk is too big she gags and chokes. I feel like I give her the same foods over and over and have a hard time coming up with nutritious meals that she likes and can be spoon fed. Also, she now drinks from a straw, but not enough so I still give her the bottle...and only her mixture of milk and half and half (ordered by Dr. H.). I do give her water from a little squirt bottle only because I don't want to overdo the milk and feel she might be thirsty at times when she has already had too much milk, imo. I know that juice is empty calories so I don't give her any. So, anyone have any ideas? Guest guest
Sheryl - well, to start with....I feed both my sons every 3 hours. Meal, Snack, Meal, Snack, Meal and then Ian ( 2 1/2 yrs RSS) gets a bed-time drink - his supplement before bed - which is 3 hours from dinner. Even if the snack is only a pretzel for Ian - it's something. Ian drinks from a sippy cup. That's all I allow during the day except at dinner when both boys drink from a regular glass (non-plastic). As far as calories - it's day-to-day. Do you have a nutritionist and/or feeding specialist? I can't remember <grin>. They would be a great source for you - especially with the feeding issues - and although they usually won't give you a menu plan (I tried but have been turned down every single time!) - they will help with ideas on what to feed and how much, etc. You know - at this point - I tend to give my children the same things over and over - because I know that's what they will eat - and with RSS - as long as it's healthy at meal-times - it's better than being finicky and not eating at all. If I do try something different - even for my 3.5 year old - I always put something on their plate that I know they will like (such as pasta - which is a great caloric/carb food) and then drinking their milk will give them the protein they need to balance it out a bit. I used to give pasta/rice, meat/protein, fruit and/or vegetable at every meal. I have been omitting the fruit only because of Ian's bowel movement and gastrointestinal issues - but, I do try to get in a banana every day. Gosh - I don't know if this helps. Sounds like you are doing a great job though. It's tough - the whole food thing - even with a non-RSS child! They get so picky as they age! Wishing the best to you. - H > > I'm just curious as to what your toddler's day looks like in terms > of food and drink. Guest guest
Sheryl, My heart goes out to you! I have been in your shoes, and its challenging! I have been very fortunite to have had many nutritionists, and occupational therapists to help along our journey. We spent a ;ot of time working on the gag reflex! We started with finger brushing his teeth, just getting him to open his mouth was a challenge, not alone an object! We were actually given ideas like: taking his favorite baby food, and giving him a couple of bites, and then crumbling a tiny amount of graham cracker into the spoon full, at first he even gaged on this, but over time, he got better and the crumbles were larger! It helped so much to tell to " just put it in your teeth and chew " Once he understood what we were saying, and that it worked, sucess was made! So many times if the food had to be manipulated by his tongue, it was a major gag fest! Oh, I would strongly reccomend an occupational therapist, they can be soooo helpful! was HUGE on crunchy, tangable foods! However, i was so concerned that he would some day be a diabetic, eating, chicken nuggets and french fries all day every day! So....We have now (he is 4.5 yrs) started a list of all the foods he has " tried " then He has to " not have then same food in a row " Like CHicken for lunch , then maybe peanut butter sandwich for dinner (with other things as well). It's a constant batle of " just letting him eat whatever he will eat! calories are calories " and " healthy foods, that will aide in future growth and health " We are still on the long road, but were always working on it! We have made up so many games to get him to eat, its crazy! Best of luck! Hope this helped a little! Missy Anne P.s. His behavoiral phyc. told us that a child his age should be eating about 4 tbp of each food group at each meal? Again he is 4! P.S.S If your interested in any other fun things we have done to accomplish a meal consumed, let me know!!!! olifraz wrote: I'm just curious as to what your toddler's day looks like in terms of food and drink. Guest guest
Hi Sheryl, I'm always wondering the same thing about other families! Maybe we can swap ideas. Dasia's most favorite thing right now is creamy dill dip. It's a vegetable dip I buy that is Wal-Mart brand, other brands might make it that I don't know about it. I just try every fattening thing I can get my hands on, and when you find something they really like it's so worth all the trial and error. This is 120 cals for 2 tbl, 110 of which are fat cals! 12 grams of fat. She dips crackers in it, and just sucks it off, usually 4 tbls!. It's like eating straight mayo! She also loves the caramel apple dip, does the same with that. We get in a lot of calories from these dips. She drinks her one suppl drink, 350 cal. And usually 2oz of cheese a day. She never really eats at the same times or same amounts day to day. I just try to offer her bits of different things all the time. There are good and bad days. One of the first things I tried, to add texture was smashed cottage cheese mixed with applesauce. The other success I had was with blended rice, cream of mushroom soup (without water), and cream cheese. This is still one of her favorites. I have had a lot of success with the different side dishes in packets like broccoli and cheese rice, butter and herb pasta etc..or tuna helper she loves. (Go easy on the tuna, high amounts of the mercury have been linked to autism). Like we don't have enough to worry about right? Any pasta or rice dishes that I can add a lot of butter and heavy cream to, and she loves it, and it's so high fat, high cal. We used to puree everything, we're up to coarsely chopped. And since the success of the Adkins diet we try to do all the no-no's for that diet. All high carb. That's why I started the rice and pasta dishes, and it turns out the butter and heavy cream taste best in these dishes. We figured each dish turns out to be around 200 cal per 4oz. It's hard to say exactly what she's getting each day. I just try not to stress out, or she may sense it, and cause more problems. She'll usually only finish 1 or 2 meals a day since we started the nutr. suppl drinks. Now she stays full more, so we're switching to Nutren Jr. which breaks down fast, and doesn't sit in the stomach long. That and whatever little chocolates or cookies, dips she really likes in between meals just to add whatever I can. We undress her and let her experiment with different dips in her high chair! We bake the frozen french fries to use for a dipper, add flavors to mayo, try different salad dressings, she loves the independance, and once they learn the fun of it, it works! We do this between meals since it's concentrated fat and cal so it doesn't fill her up, but get the cals. All she really drinks in a day is her 8oz nutr. suppl. drink., and I still nurse once morning and night, not sure she's getting that much from that though. I wish she had more wet diapers. I get more concerned about that. I'm hoping to get 2 Nutren's in her once we start that. Anyway, hope this helps at all! Guest guest
Hi Sheryl and , I am always looking for ways to get Chloe to eat as well. Chloe drinks two 6 oz of pedia sure in between meals. She also loves little debbies, like the halloween ones. She loves junk food and would eat it constantly;cheetos, cakes, cookies, dips of any sort, pretzels.Should I allow her to so much junk just to get calories in her? When we sit down for a meal she will eat 3 bites on her own but every bite after that is such a struggle. We(her dad and I)try to come up with more clever ways to get her excited about eating. Alot of the time we have a problem with her chewing up her food and then spitting it out,how do you stop that? Thank you for listening, Reah and Chloe:) Malcolm wrote: Hi Sheryl, I'm always wondering the same thing about other families! Maybe we can swap ideas. Guest guest
Hi Reah, I try to make eating time fun too. When possible I let Dasia feed me what she's eating, and I always act like I " love " eating, also when I eat around her, to try for her to take some bites of what I'm having. I may have more trouble with feeding once she's eating independantly, a lot of the time if I keep her distracted by playing games, I can shovel food in. It gets exhausting sometimes, but whatever works, and we always do a happy dance after each pushed bite toward the end of the meal to get as many in as possible. Once she starts fussing at me outloud, I know not to push anymore. I know Chloe is older, but you'll have to forgive me, how old is she again? For us, when Dasia is refusing everything else, I will give her junk food, just to get anything in. Especially if Chloe is getting the pediasure, I wouldn't worry if you have days where she didn't have much healthy food. We have days like that, and I just don't see any way around it. I do have an idea of what I will do when Dasia gets old enough to reason with. I'll make a pretty " Dasia " chart to hang on the fridge, where, she'll get a sticker for each day that she eats well, and if by the end of the week she did well, and got enough stickers, I will have a treasure chest of dollar store prizes for her to choose from. Haven't gotten there yet, it may need to be each sticker per meal and prize at the end of the day, depending on how much trouble I'm having with her eating. I use this system with my older kids if they start misbehaving too much, and if they get enough stickers and not very many sad faces by the end of the week, they get a prize. As for the Nutren Jr. I tried to check the Nestle site to see if it's the same price as other sources, and couldn't find a price. At Allegro Medical.com it's $45 per case for the Nutren Jr with fiber, $8.95 for shipping. Free shipping with $100 purchase. It seemed pretty much the same at each site I checked though. Guest guest
Sheryl, I forgot to mention a couple smooth healthy foods I use for Dasia. The center of a hard boiled egg mixed with heavy cream, and avacodo mixed with a little veggie dip. Also, after I would puree a good amount of table food I would put it in ice cube trays and freeze it, then into a freezer bag, and hopefully she'll eat 3 cubes per meal on average, I think it's 1oz per cube. Any healthful ideas that anyone may have to add, please let us know! She also likes cheesecake stirred up well with milk, very high fat. Guest guest
, Hi. Thanks, I love the idea for the chart with the stickers, Chloe loves stickers! Chloe will be 28 months on the 11. We had an absolutely awful day as far as food went today. She ate two mac. & cheese noodles all day. I spent all day making every favorite thing that I knew of that she loved to eat and made the biggest fusses over it when I would eat it. I will put her in her highchair to eat and she will grab a bite look me straight in the face and drop it over the side onto the floor, its a big awful game to her.I had to leave at 6pm to go to work and I do believe she ate for her dad(burger king).Nutren jr just isn't for gtubes only, right? She can drink it and it comes in good flavors and such.Thank you for your help and I do hope you and your family are well:) Till next time. Guest guest
Hi Reah! Dasia does the same thing, thinks it's so funny to throw her food on the floor for the dog to eat. From what everyone says, the kids like the Nutren Jr, and someone had a great idea, although it comes in vanilla, you can add chocolate or strawberry syrup. Dasia is a huge strawberry fan, so that was great advice. I hope Chloe is eating better today. How much does she weigh? REAH MCNEESE wrote: , Hi. Guest guest
, Chloe is 17lbs and 30.75 in. When I found this group just recently I have been worrying about the 15% weight/height thing before you start gh, seeing how chloes already on it,4 months now,and no one thought this would be important ti mention. I need not to get so frustrated I know they are probly doing the best they can for their knowledge. However he comes off as if he has treated many rss children so I trusted him. I can't wait to get an appt. to see Dr.H. Have you seen her?Do you ever come to ga?My inlaws are in western ky,really close to indianna, I believe some people live their. I would just love to meet some families, ya know. I hope Dasia is as sweet and perfect as ever. Give her a big hug for me:)We can do this, right? Thanks, Reah and Chloe:) Malcolm wrote: Hi Reah!
