Guest guest
I am curious regarding how many on this list are dealing with UC issues on their own vs. using an ND. We have been trying to work with my son's condition on our own and am wondering if we should have the oversight of an ND. Do NDs endorse SCD? We have tried so many things and are hoping that following SCD is going to be what works but I feel a bit fearful as we seem to play hit or miss on the diet. We are still waiting to see something positive in order to keep our hope up. Eileen Mother of 19 yo son with UC UC for 5 years/no meds struggling to hang onto his 123 lbs. Guest guest
Eileen I just posted about being constipated and finding a nutrtitionist. I have UC. There are 2 NDs I was looking into but not sure if I'll go that route just yet bc the nutrtitionist has helped me so much. It took me 8 months and the nutrtitionist's advice but now I'm feeling more energized. Other than pizza and lattes, I don't miss much. I was overwhelmed for so long but feel like i'm more in control now I hope your son gets to his point some day. I spent 25 years being told that if I would just stop stuffing my face and lose some weight, my problems would all clear up. That the problems didn't clear up when I lost weight, and spent three years at a normal weight was irrelevant. I should lose MORE weight. The problem with working with a health care practitioner is that even when they say they support SCD, they frequently do not understand all the parameters and will recommend things which are not SCD legal. As a consequence, while I could not advise someone not to consult with a health care professional, I would advise you to know SCD forwards and backwards so that if one tells you, " Oh, wheat bread once a week won't matter, " you can either correct them, or quietly ignore that part of the advice. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle

I found acupuncture very helpful in preparing for my cancer surgery 2.5 years ago. However, I would be very cautious of mixed herb teas because they can frequently contain substances that are SCD-illegal, and may retard your long-term progress. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle
Guest guest
An ND should work with what you can handle. That's the beauty of them. They are not constrained to the parameters of conventional medicine. I would talk him/her before you meet to make sure they understand and bring the BTVC for them to read so they can understand the science behind the diet. Since your son is having active symptoms, it might be a good idea to have a doctor involved. Guest guest
First off, I have Crohn's, and not UC. But since my diagnosis in Nov. 2009 I've been on the SCD, and then started seeing a Naturopath shortly therafter. My ND doctor has Crohn's, and so I put a lot of faith in what he says. STILL, I check everything he suggests by BTVC. I come from a doctor's family, and so I was cautious about doing it all on my own. Having a doctor who KNOWS this disease and is very passionate about getting people to feel better gives me a sense of peace with how I am approaching Crohn's. Guest guest
I think it's very good to have some medical person to bat things around with. I've had excellent results with acupuncture (for various problems) but didn't get along with Chinese herbs at all. This was some years ago, but I feel now probably they were all full of illegals, probably polysaccharides. I had very mixed results with an ND. He did a gazillion tests, found I have hypoglycemia, and got me on a good diet (for then) and I still only have hypoglycemia instead of sliding into diabetes though it's been 35 years. I really haven't eaten a SAD diet since. That's the good part. On the other hand, I had a breast lump a few years later and he was busily treating it for cancer, which it was, but he didn't tell me that, just said I had a " cyst " . It got worse and after about six months I did find a surgeon and had a mastectomy, but you will understand that I worried for a few years that that six months was going to kill me. To be honest, I haven't seen an ND since. My preference is an MD with a holisitic bent, which I have now, because I think this gives me the widest possible coverage, as it were. However, I've been quite lucky in finding this doctor, and a similar one before him. I know some people have very good luck with an ND, though.
