Guest guest
OK...today is day 4 of a second round with the intro diet. THe first time was only for 2 days and we were new to this and moved too quickly into all legals. After no improvement, he wanted to do the intro again. He thinks he should stay on the intro but I thought you should only do it for 5 days max? Shouldn't there be some small sign of improvement? Below is what he has existed on all week long. Breakfast: 2 scrambled eggs with DCCC added last two days, diluted apple cider or grape juice;cheese cake; one morning some chicken from the soup Lunch: beef patty (salt, pepper, garlic powder;added a small amount of legal mustard and oregano yesterday)chicken soup, cheese cake, apple cider Dinner: beef patty, chicken soup, cheese cake; last night had broiled salmon Drinks: he has diluted his apple cider and grape juice with either club soda or Pellagrino water Evening snack (at least 1 1/2 hour before bed): some diluted apple cider and cheesecake Supplements: He had been taking Freeda's SCD Multivitamin (1 only at this point)but hasn't taken any for the past two days. Probiotic: No yogurt; every time he has tried this stools get worse He tried SCDolphilus at 1/2 capsule for a week but same thing and stopped. S. Boulardi:had been taking one but bumped up to two for the past two days based on list recommendation. Bottom line results: Frequeny has increased to sometimes 6 per day;stools are often watery; very tired on day 3 (took a 1 1/2 nap in the afternoon); very stiff muscles Also...very discouraged and frustrated. Should he continue on the intro and make some changes...but what? Any suggestions? Guest guest
Hi, I noticed he is not on any meds. Are you opposed to all medication? The reason I asked is because many of us use medication and SCD. If you look at some of the stories of people (like Raman Prassad) who are not on meds, you will see that they started SCD on medication and later, when they had no symptoms- chose to stop ( some against doctor's advice)their meds on their own. Since he has symptoms, you may want to consider staying on SCD and adding a medication too. This is just my thought because I don't think Elaine ever suggested diet as a replacement for medication although for some people this seems to have been the course. The diet is supposed to help, but people have used all avenues to feel better. PJ > > OK...today is day 4 of a second round with the intro diet. I know in the beginning I wanted to supplement right away with a multi-vitamin and calcium, but stopped due to some guidance from this group. It definitely helped. Keep in mind that if he is having frequent, watery stools, then he probably isn't absorbing much of the vitamins right now anyway. In terms of him feeling tired, having stiff muscles and being discouraged- I think that's perfectly normal! There are so many changes he is going through right now- less sugar and carbs. Die-off. Perhaps less caffeine? The beginning of the diet is the hardest because of all of these factors- we all go through this grumpy stage where we feel like cr*p. It's not an instant cure- it takes time to heal. Hang in there! And it is okay to go back to the intro for a few days if he feels like he needs to, but be sure to start adding back the other foods. You are right- the intro isn't to be done for more than 5 days. -Joanna SCD 9/2009, Crohn's 1992, 20mg Prednisone
Guest guest
I will echo Mara on asking if your DS wants to come in here directly. I understand your position as I am the mom of 2 boys about his age, and since I do cook when they are home, it would make sense for me to be here. (And they would much rather have Mom deal with the food and the kitchen )However when they are away from home they fend for themselves and my older one is learning to cook. I think he would find other inspiring young people- like Alyssa- and it may keep him motivated to continue on SCD, and lift his spirits a bit to know he is not alone. Guest guest
Eileen, I understand that your son doesn't want to take medications because I feel the same way and I am now med free, but I did take prednisone in the beginning of starting scd and I would recommend thinking about that as an option because I think calming down the inflammation helps us to digest our food better and starts the healing process. For the first month I was on scd I was very conservative, meaning I drank only water, no probiotics, no yogurt, just plain meats and soft boiled vegetables. I also took a week off from work to rest and relax. If your son can take off work I would recommend it highly. Avoiding stress and getting enough sleep are valuable to healing. My first signs of improvement were reduced gas, reduced bloating and reduced gurgling noises. After that my bowel movements just kept getting firmer and firmer and less frequent. Now after 8 months I only have 1 bm a day. I hope you start to see results for you son soon. UC 1 year 2 months SCD 8 months no meds > > OK...today is day 4 of a second round with the intro diet. Guest guest
This sort of thing always has me puzzled about drugs. A few years ago they gave my sister a drug for high blood pressure. It gave her a heart attack. One of the known, listed side-effects of this drug is.... heart attack. This is supposed to make sense? What always had me stumped was that one of the side effects to both Asacol and Imuran is diarrhea. can anyone please help me to understand WHY drugs that can cause diarrhea are prescribed when diarrhea is a major issue?? Guest guest
Agreed. As long as we don't have to take them. When I took Diflucan earlier in the year I asked the Pharmacist about side effects. He said not to worry, there weren't any. I said oh come on, there are always side effects! He said well, of course you might get diarrhea, nausea, vomiting. Nothing to worry about. I must have rolled my eyes. He then added, " Oh, now, if you get a RASH, you should report that to your doctor. " As I was walking away I heard him still muttering, " No side effects " . > A few years ago they gave my sister a drug for high blood pressure. > It gave her a heart attack. I love ridiculous drugs, they make me laugh =) As long as I don't have to take them. Cheers! Alyssa 16 yo
Guest guest
Now I am getting off-topic, but my husband and I have this game we play whenever the minute-long drug commercials come on and they break into the part where they have to give all of the side-effects. We try to come up with our own side-effects (because some of them are amazingly outrageous) like " crazy eyeball twitch! " or " spontaneous combustion! " It's hard to believe with a lot of these new drugs how much potential harm they can do. -Joanna > > Agreed. As long as we don't have to take them.
