My son is 6 1/2 and takes Karate. He does not have a feeding tube, but my 2 year

daughter does. She is dying to take karate and will probably start when she

turns 3. My son's teacher has not said anything to make me think that the tube

will be any problem. In fact, she can't wait for her start. I will ask her

tonight though after class. As far as to what to look for in a good Karate

school, for us it was a teacher that was in tune with the kids. My son's

teacher has been trained to work with children and she makes sure that they keep

their manners in check and knows when to give a child that is having trouble

with moves extra time. The school also plans all kinds of activities, which

really helps keep it like a family atmospher. They test every 8 weeks for their

next belt and the school keeps up with their grades in school and home behavior.

The classes are two nights a week for 30 minutes and you can either go Monday,

Wednesday or Tuesday, Thursday. That way the classes are

kept small and they get more individual attention. Now this is for the little

kids, the bigger gets have a more strict schedule.

I'll try to email what the teacher says about feeding tubes tonight.

Hi everyone,

Does anyone have a child with a feeding tube who has been able to take

karate? Is there anything special that the teacher needs to know?

Anything the child can't do? What should we look for in a good karate

school?

Thanks for any help you can give us. I really hope we can sign him up

for it!

How old is Tyler? The only problem he may have is with sparring. They wear

protective gear, but the tube might still get kicked. My son's instructor said

if you can give her an age, she can give a more accurate answer. The Karate

school you are looking into should be able to tell you also.

Max took karate for several years and never had a problem. He still

uses some of the techniques he learned. When he and , my

husband, start their play fighting, he can block pretty well.
