Guest guest
Hi everyone,I remember reading somewhere that in addition to Friendship Farmers cheese, another legal brand of DCCC is Lifeways Farmers cheese. Unfortunately, I can't remember now where I read that! Anyway, last week my local Fresh Market was out of Friendship so I went to Whole Foods which has Lifeways and I bought a package. It has basically the same consistency and taste as Friendship (maybe just slightly creamier?), and so far I've been eating it (2 days) with no ill effects. But I'm puzzled because it lists 4g of sugar on the package, whereas Friendship has 0g. Does this mean it's illegal? I'll finish this package since it doesn't seem to be causing problems, but I'd like to know for future reference. (Also it's quite a bit cheaper than Friendship, so if it is legal I might get it more often.) Thanks,Misha
Guest guest
I went through this same issue about 4months back and the verdict was that because of the 4G of carbs, that meant that it still contained lactose (which is why it is more creamy than the Friendship brand), thereby making it illegal. Sorry. I was able to have my local Whole Foods order an entire case of the Friendship brand for me (it freezes well), and personally think it tastes better. -Dana, UC since 2007 SCD going on 6mo > > Hi everyone, > > I remember reading somewhere that in addition to Friendship Farmers cheese, > another legal brand of DCCC is Lifeways Farmers cheese. Guest guest
Dear Dana,Hmm, that is interesting--did you see my follow-up post with the response I got from Lifeways? I asked them and they said that their product is legal and that they don't add anything to the cheese after it's made, so it doesn't have milk/cream added. Well, Fresh Market got its stock of Friendship DCCC back so I'm all set (I had asked Whole Foods if they could order me some Friendship DCCC back when I started SCD and they said no), but the Lifeways is quite a bit cheaper, so it would be nice to be able to rely on that sometimes! Where did you find out it was illegal? Thanks,Misha I went through this same issue about 4months back and the verdict was that because of the 4G of carbs, that meant that it still contained lactose (which is why it is more creamy than the Friendship brand), thereby making it illegal. Guest guest
There was a thread on this back in April, entitled " Legal DCCC " (I don't know how to link to it here, but you can search the archives for " Legal DCCC " ). Maybe I'm wrong, maybe the jury is still out on this, not sure. I too was confused b/c I came across a uTube video of a gal describing the DCCC, of course she was eating the Friendship Dairy brand, but in the video it listed Lifeway Farmers cheese as SCD legal, so i bought it, only to hear conflicting concerns from this group on the fact that it had 4G of carbs listed. Since I trust the experience of this group more than a uTube video, I'm erroring on the side of caution and sticking with the Friendship brand myself. -Dana, UC since 2007 SCD going on 6mo > > > > > > > I went through this same issue about 4months back and the verdict was that because of the 4G of carbs, that meant that it still contained lactose (which is why it is more creamy than the Friendship brand), thereby making it illegal.
