I will repeat what I've said often before and that is I do believe any

prescription for prednisone should be accompanied by a referral to a

dietician or nutritionist specializing in diabetes. Joyce has basically

gone on a diabetic type diet in watching her carbs. I would if I went on

Prednisone. First, you're highly likely to get diabetes and even more so

if you don't diet. Second, the weight gain is a real issue and taking

any care you can from the outset makes sense.

In addition to the direct impacts on health that prednisone can have,

the doctors need to recognize and warn as to the others such as weight

and mood swings. Perhaps if they did that better up front, people could

minimize the impact.

me too. In the beginning they put me on 40mg of Pred and I was spinning around like a crazy woman and dropped almost 20 lbs. As I started to taper down the weight came back

My doc has referred me to a Dietician who I go see next week. But so far I'm doing well on Dr. Oz's plan, don't have the cravings as long as I eat several small meals throughout the day.

Bruce , you are so right. I was not informed and, unfortunately, did not do any

research on it until after the fact. I wish I had known it at the time. My

regular GP was furious when she found out. She guided me to the enlightened

path of diabetic diet, and the pro-active patient teachings. You have

reinforced these issues again and again... keep doing it, Bruce. I carry all of

my pertinent records with me and ask for copies whenever I go to the ER or ANY

doctor. I have a copy of my last PFT, 6 minute walk, arterial blood gas and

list of current physicians & medications. It has proven a very smart practice

and I make sure they make copies and return my originals (I am still learning

that lesson as I have had to re-acquire information that one office managed to

mess up). I have my CT scan from National Jewish (done in June and used for my

biopsy in August) on CD. Having the HRCT on CD has saved me from having two

additional CT scans.

1 piece of bread, 1 small roll, 1 small potatoe, 1/2 cup rice, anything

that equals 15 grams of carbs is " 1 " carb. Some diets give you total in

big units (say no more than 100 grams a day) or some give you the carb

total such as no more than 8 units. You need to watch out for starchy

vegatable like corn and peas. There are many carb lists out in internet

land.

i learned about it when i contacted the diabetic association for literature re: diabetes

then i took the diabetes course at the local hospital

the dietician figured out how many calories and carbs i should be eating daily

i am almost 5 feet tall and was told 150 grams of carbs daily

about 45 grams per meal for me

all of the canned goods and boxed goods list the carbs per serving, and how many servings per container or the size of the serving

i also took out diabetic cookbooks from the library

they have great introductions that teach all sorts of stuff

i ignore the recipes

there are different types of carbs -- grains, fruits, milk etc

basically, you need a well balanced diet and you need to learn portion control

in the beginning, i had my measuring spoons and cups out and used them all of the time

i tend to eat the same thing most of the time anyway

example

breakfast: used to eat about 2/3 cup cereal, now i eat 1/3 cup cereal, with 1/2 banana, and 1/2 cup milk

might eat 1 whole boiled egg

or 2 egg whites

eggs do not have carbs, but they do have calories, egg whites have less calories than one egg

in the beginning had a hard time throwing out the yolks, but that's what i have to do

if i eat eggs for dinner, i will mix one whole egg with a couple of egg whites

eat the rest of the banana later in day

can also drink more milk later in day

used to buy those 100 calorie cans of fruit and eat the whole can, now i eat half the can save the rest for later

canned fruit -- in natural fruit juices, no sweetened fruit juices

one slice bread instead of 2, unless its the low calorie bread,

count the number of chips, pretzels etc

In the beginning it takes forever to shop, checking carbs, sodium levels, etc

i tend to ignore the calories

the goal was to keep my glucose under control

sorry for the long answer

Walnuts are full of antioxidants and protein. They are very good for cardiovascular health and are recognized by the FDA to have cholesterol lowering properties. If you like nuts it's the one to add to your diet.

as a matter of fact the eye doctor recommended "hydro tears" for my dry eyes -- they contain omega 3 fatty acids

when i went to a new cardiologist, he was happy to see that i was taking "hydro tears" and prescribed it in the form of Lovaza, a prescription

he said it was good for the heart too
