Guest guest
hello! your dentist may not necessarily know whether you need it or not... that's the orthodontists speciality.... If you want to know for sure, I would go ahead and book an appointment with an orthodontist. Guest guest
I'm not sure how old you are, but I was almost 47 when I had my upper/lower/genio in August of 2002. I'd had clicks, pops, locking of my jaws for years but never knew there was a problem that could be fixed. My regular dentist (whom we started seeing in 1992) was monitoring this and would ask me if I was in any pain. One day I said yes, I was starting to have pain on opening to eat. That's when he referred me to a TMJ specialist who, he said, would be expensive (and he was!). I guess what I'm saying is that you may find that you'll have problems later in life. My joints were starting to wear down since sometimes they would be rubbing bone on bone. My ortho/TMJ specialist said I'd compensated well over the years. I didn't have problems chewing. He suggested splint treatment to help with the TMJ pain, or surgery. I opted for surgery as I felt things would only get worse, not better. There's nothing wrong with consulting with an orthodontist/oral surgeon to see if your condition warrants correction, and to answer questions like " what will happen in future if I do nothing " and to explain all the risks associated with this type of surgery. I don't think my dentist thought that I'd need surgery to correct my problems, he was just being compassionate about my pain and hoped I'd get some relief. Hope that helps, > Hi, > > I have bimaxillary protrusion and a severely receded chin, however, > they do not cause me any pain or problems with speech or eating. > > I have brought up seeking orthognathic and/or orthodontic treatment to > my dentist but she said I didn't " need " it. > > I guess I already answered my own question, but were any of you able > discomfort? > > Thank you.
