Hello, " oceanluv76 " - Congratulations on getting your braces on and

moving ahead with all this! My braces were put on two weeks ago, so it

seems we're on the same timetable. I have an underbite and will be

having a BSSO (Bilat. Sagittal Split(Ramus)Osteotomy) to set back my

mandible and a probable LeFort to advance my maxilla and drop it down

in front. I will be in braces up to ten months prior to my surgery and

up to six months afterward. You have stated you will be having upper

surgery; what do you have - overbite, underbite, openbite, crossbite --?

Well, congratulations on beginning your Orthognathic Journey - you are

not alone! Take care. ~~~~~ Diane

Here is my experience....

I had my expander surgery on October 8, 2003. I was in and out and

back home before I knew it - I didn't stay in the hospital at all

after surgery. I did swell and bruise quite a bit. I didn't think the

pain was that bad. I felt it, but it wasn't that bad. The biggest

problem I had post-surgery was eating. I didn't start ensure/boost

until 10 days after surgery. I would highly recommend starting that

as soon as you can after surgery...it makes a difference in

recovering. I was out running erands with my husband the next day. I

couldn't drive, but could ride. I resumed driving myself the

following Monday. I hope that helps. If you have any questions, please

feel free to ask.

Dee -

Thanks for your input. I will stock up on Ensure for sure. I have

not had that before but I hear that is what to have on hand.

Thanks for the input. The docs always give the longest healing time

but I wasn't sure what to expect (wanted a patient's input!). My

surgery is outpatient too. I just scheduled Oct. 4 as the big day.

My ortho said some of his patients have been up and running in half

a week but to set aside a week to get better.

I have already had an expander (not surgically) while in high school

15 years ago! Wow. This is round 2 but gonna do it right.

Thanks for you input. :)

Hi Diane,

Thanks for your email. I'm still figuring out how this group works

and just found your message!

Yes we are on the same timeline it seems. I just had my braces put

on Friday. Most people don't even seem to notice them right away -

have the clear ones. I am reliving my inner teenager once again.

This is my 3rd time with braces (first as an adult) but finally

getting the bite corrected. Had no idea it was not right to begin

with but a nice dentist pointed me in the right direction. Decided

to do treatment because of TMJ pain and bite contributing to teeth

grinding. Dang bites!!!!

I don't know all the technical terms for what I have and will be

doing (I'm sure I will learn) but I can say in layman's. I have

braces. Getting expander with surgery on palette this October. Then

upper jaw surgery by June or July. However, if all goes as planned

and I do my bit, realistically could be 6 months from now (March or

April). I would prefer sooner than later so I can be laid up during

the winter!

I have a class 3 underbite with a small open bite and cross bite.

The expander will take care of the open bite and cross bite and help

with the underbite. The upper jaw surgery (la forte) will move my

jaw forward and down (just like you!). So will have a beautiful

smile and can see my teeth more. :)

Fortunately it looks like I don't need lower jaw surgery at this

time.

That is the story. How are the braces going? Mine are good. A

waterpik is my cleaning savior right now. I totally totally

recommend!
