I'm lucky if I get 10 or 20 words out of my shrink sometimes! There was one day, though, that he started talking about something -- can't remember what now, and after about ten minutes or so, I said, " , you seem to be forgetting that this is about ME - shut up. " He laughed, said, " You're absolutely right! " and then shut up! Guest guest
I have been sitting on your statement, Carol, for a few days now (obviously), because quite frankly I found it so personally ... unsettling. An economy of words in service of a profound truth, imprinted on MY heart but delivered from YOUR mouth. Since I can't see him, it's his gentle snoring, or little noises that makes me aware of it -- I usually shout, " MICHAEL, WAKE UP! " Typically, this only happens when he has been sick and has been taking meds -- he's always been extremely sorry and at least one time did not charge me for the session. Of course, there are also times when he wants to spend some of the session time talking about how I " feel " about him sleeping! I've seen him a number of years now, and am in the process of terminating. It's been interesting to watch this process unfold. I meet with him much less often then I used to (at one point I had to see him four times per week to keep myself out of the crazy house and away from the sharp objects). He's always been very mellow about my quitting -- it's totally up to me. He also has made it clear that if/when I quit, I can always come back if I want to -- I don't have to think of it as " forever. " I was seeing him before I had weight loss surgery and he has seen me through the whole process -- from deciding to have it, writing a letter to the surgeon, medicating me correctly during the post op stages, dealing with the pain of being separated from my use of food for comfort, dealing with the different way that people react to me -- all of it. I think he is really proud of the changes that have happened in my life.
