Dana, Never having been a runner, I can't help with your other question, but let me just say... CONGRATULATIONS! That is so super spectacular. Guest guest
Dates and/or raisins(if you can tolerate dried fruits) are great for after a long run. THey are high on the glycemic index, so replenish your glycogen stores quickly. I have tried them during long runs, but they sometimes gave me cramps. I have also just used honey in little baggies during long runs (just tore off an end and squeezed it into my mouth). That worked great, but was a bit of a hassle. I have not found any power foods that are legal. Best of luck! > > Hi All, > I never thought after being as sick as I was 4 1/2 years ago (then finding the > diet, then getting well!!) that I'd evger be saying this, but I am running the > LA Marathon this training season!Since all of the sports malodextrin/sugar/candy > " power " booster things are clearly illegal, I was wondering if anyone had tips > for training food??? > Apparently, fresh green smoothies in the blender are bigtime helpful ( this I > can do) & > > Apparently, HIGH PROTIEN diets are kep to doing well. Guest guest
I meant to add that bananas were my favorite pre-run food. Guest guest
Congratulations Dana on your upcoming marathon! When I was at my sickest, I couldn't venture out of the house or walk a block to the store. When I got better, I felt so happy to be able to run for miles without needing a bathroom that I ran a couple marathons (although I did have to stop and use the bathrooms along the course at least half a dozen times). Anyway, I would highly recommend coconut water, which I have recently discovered. I drank it before a 7 mile race this summer and it worked beautifully. I drank it an hour before the race so it had time to get into my system and then sipped water 10 minutes before the race. If you are carrying water supplies with you, this might be a great addition to the water. I'm not sure what you can use for food supply during the marathon. I used GU (pre SCD), which I'm sure has tons of sugar. But it was soft and easily digestible so maybe something that's mushy or already half digested would be good. Let me know what you figure out and maybe I can try it as well. Best, inflamedmom >
Guest guest
Do be aware that coconut water from green coconuts is illegal, though the water from the fully ripened brown husky coconuts is legal. This was discussed at length with Elaine. Suneeti (Crohns, SCD 2000)
Guest guest
Suneeti,Do you know if the benefit from the mature coconut water is the same as the young coconut water?AmeliaTo: BTVC-SCD Sent: Fri, September 10, 2010 5:36:35 PMSubject: Re: (SCD LEGAL) marathon training !!! Guest guest
I am guessing, but I would think it definitely should have some benefit since the coconut itself has such wonderful properties. Since the mature coconut has ripened, the water from this stage of the coconut was allowed by Elaine. Suneeti (Crohns, SCD 2000)
Guest guest
Hi Dana, That's awesome that you feel so great to do a marathon! I'm sorry I have no advice for you as I only did marathons before I got Crohn's, but I'd love to hear about your experience with training and how you feel. Keep us posted! I hope one day I feel good enough to at least get a regular running schedule back, and you've given me hope. Best of luck with your training and SCD nutrition! Guest guest
Hi Dana, That's awesome! I'm training for the LA marathon as well. I'm trying to figure out what to eat too. So far I've substituted the illegal drinks with watered down salted juices. Seems to work so far. My plan for the longer runs is to carry some almond crackers and maybe some banana chips. Are you training with a group? If you're running with the Leggers on Sat, I would love to meet you!
