Guest guest
I was wondering if everyone could post what they have been able to tolerate at different chain-type restaurants (ie: Red Lobster, Biaggi's, Olive Garden). Went to Red Lobster last night and had shrimp scampi with broccoli and caeser salad w/out croutons. Feeling really rough today, worse than normal. I probably should have went with a plain fish or salmon and no salad (don't do well with lettuces). It would be nice though to see what others have been able to eat at different common places. Guest guest
Sounds like you're rushing things a little. I would not eat out at any restaurant until you're feeling much better...(No D). Then you will only be able to eat at places that can tell you exactly what is in the food. Most chains do not know. They serve pre-packaged,pre-mixed food. I was able to have a chicken salad at Bob . They can make it the way you want and have vinegar and oil. I was a bit nervous about the vinegar though and will bring my own next time. Gourmet restaurants are your best bet. The chef knows what is in everything he cooks. Good Luck! > > I was wondering if everyone could post what they have been able to tolerate at different chain-type restaurants (ie: Red Lobster, Biaggi's, Olive Garden). Guest guest
It was not at a "large chain" but I have ordered Talapia plain with light lemon and salt and did not have a reaction...But that is about it.. If I ordered a grill shrimp salad either the lettcues or the seasoning on the shrimp does not agree with me and the same goes for grill chicken salads... I did go to an open grill "sushi" type place that I was able to watch what seasoning was used and stop them before they put the wrong thing or did not clean the grill and that night the steak and shrimp agreed with me..I am anxious to hear others responses as well. Guest guest
I have good success with Red Robin. I order off their gluten free menu so they know to be careful. I order the guacamole cheeseburger w/out bacon, protein style, no seasoning. Then I order their fresh fruit as a side. I have had chipotle w/chicken, pepper/onions, salsa, lettuce and quac - this one if iffy and risky for me but sometimes I do OK w/it. I remember someone else posting that they ate there. I also had Olive Garden one time and ordered off their gluten free menu. I got chicken and steak w/vegies and requested no seasoning. I ate mostly the steak and some vegies as I figured the chicken and vegies were probably pre-seasoned. I did have a small amt of salad. Did you know that you can request they use romaine lettuce instead of iceberg? They might not be happy but they'll do it. Iceberg is much harder for most to digest I believe. Since I'm not a huge fish person I tend to stick w/restaurants that I can order a hamburger at. Guest guest
One reason people may have more trouble with iceberg lettuce is this. I've read several times that it has tons more pesticides sprayed on it during growing than any other kind of lettuce. Did you know that you can request they use romaine lettuce instead of iceberg? They might not be happy but they'll do it. Iceberg is much harder for most to digest I believe. Marla

Red Lobster's " butter sauce " is not real butter -- it's margarine and a whole bunch of flavorings. If you had the Caesar salad dressing, that almost certainly contained sugar and starch. I carry in my own dressing for something like that. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle

Guest guest
I haven't even considered going to a restaurant since beginning the SCD, because I know they will be sneaking something into their food and the diet doesn't allow most things at restaurants anyway. But that's something that has always irritated me. The phrase " real butter " should not need to exist. Anyone who calls margarine or other substitutes " butter " is an uncultured philistine committing a crime against food. > > Red Lobster's " butter sauce " is not real butter > -- it's margarine and a whole bunch of flavorings. > > If you had the Caesar salad dressing, that almost > certainly contained sugar and starch. Guest guest
Hey - I agree! I had a blast traveling to the southern beaches for vacation. The few times we ate out I got steamed seafood and when I asked if the butter was real or if it was margarine they looked at me like I was crazy! They love their butter in the south -Joanna > > I haven't even considered going to a restaurant since beginning the SCD, because I know they will be sneaking something into their food and the diet doesn't allow most things at restaurants anyway. Guest guest
I ate at Chipotle a few nights ago for the first time and got a salad with chicken and cheese. After a few bites I had to go straight to the bathroom and had a stomach ache for the rest of the night. Definitely won't eat there again. I eat at Red Robin fairly often and get their lettuce wrap burger and it comes with a side salad. Also, I eat at In N Out all the time and get the buger protein style. If you are on the east coast, Elevation Burger serves grass fed beef and I get the cheeseburger lettuce wrap. Yum! > > I have good success with Red Robin. Guest guest
Hi , I've been to the Olive Garden and had both their shrimp and salmon (plain) and their broccoli (also plain). I just went to Outback Steakhouse this weekend and had plain salmon and veggies, and I seem to be OK. I always ask for no seasonings and no butter, because I'm unsure of if they use real butter so I figure I might as well be safe. I haven't tried any other chains, and honestly I kind of get bored of the stuff I get when I eat out, because I usually can make better tasting food at home. But it's always for the social aspect to go out to eat, so it's nice to get out. Hope you find some things that work for you. Good luck! Feeling really rough today, worse than normal. Red Lobster's " butter sauce " is a whole horrible mix of illegals, including starch and maltodextrin and gums. Likewise, the Caesar salad dressing almost certainly contains gums and sugar or corn syrup. I carry my own Caesar salad dressing, my own grated Parmesan, and my own butter. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle

But I've had more than one restaurant person tell me they were using butter and they were using margarine or a butter-margarine blend. A couple of years ago, we were at a friend's house, and he fixed dinner. I asked about the veggies, and he said he was sauteeing them in butter. Fine, it's legal. Then I wanted out and saw the margarine on the counter, and said, " I thought you were cooking the vegetables in BUTTER. " He said, " I am, " and pointed to the margarine. I said, " That's margarine. I can't have margarine. I can only have real butter. " He didn't think there was any difference.... <sigh> — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle
