Guest guest
Kim, This is just my opinion but I'd call them and make them see him NOW. It sounds like he's reached his platue ( or however you spell it) and he may need help getting over that hump. What laxative are you using? I know Most RSS kids benefit very well from Miralax. Madison takes that and it's awesome. Chrissy
Guest guest
Hi Kim, Is he eating? My son Noah didn't gain very fast either ... he weighed just under 20 lbs for more than 6 mos with no gains ... we just put him on Periactin to stimulate his appetite and he gained 7 ounces in 4 weeks. Guest guest
>this is all very helpful, he is on miralax, just not sure if im over reacting or not. maybe i can aleast schedule a weight check with his primary and see what she thinks. when we saw his gi in nov a feeding tube was mentioned, but we wanted to deal with the tubes in his ears and the miralax first to see if that got us anywhere. > Kim, > This is just my opinion but I'd call them and make them see him NOW. Guest guest
Hi Kim, Brayden's weight is concerning, especially if he hasn't gained weight in the time period you specified. Is he on an appetite stimulant like Periactin? How much does he actually eat? I think waiting until March may not be a good idea, but you should keep a food diary of everything Brayden eats for a period of at least a week to show to the doctor and/or nutritionist. They can help you calculate the amount of calories Brayden is actually taking in. When was the last time he saw the pediatrician? Was he concerned? I am not trying to scare you, but my son who is now 12 was probably one of the smallest RSS babies. I keep detailed records, and at 22 months, he was only 13 lbs. This was with a g-tube on continuous feeds (no food orally). However, 6 months prior to 22 months (age 16 months), he was 10.5 lbs, so he was gaining steadily. He hit 15 lbs. at age 2. I think you should call the GI and nutritionist to see if you can get in sooner. If not, maybe schedule an appointment with the pediatrician in the meantime and get his input. Kim C. Guest guest
Kim - I concur with Chrissy. Miralax worked wonders for Ian - and it has no taste so they don't even know they are taking it. - H > > Kim, > This is just my opinion but I'd call them and make them see him NOW. Guest guest
Hi, I just wanted to chime in here about Periactin...I think it is more of a gradual thing for most kids and they need to be on it for the long term...also, the dosage needs to be correct based on their weight. I know that Dr. H. prescribed a higher dose for Dalia than her regular GI did, so it may be worth looking into that.. Sheryl (mom to Dalia, 2, RSS and Hanna, 5 mos, non-RSS) > > > > > > my son brayden in 22months and maybe 15 pounds, we have never > seen > > him > > > gain over 15 1/2 pounds, he's been roughly the same weight for at > > least > > > 6 months now. in early dec he had tubes placed in his ears, so we > > have > > > no infections, thank god. we also have him on a laxitive to deal > > with a > > > constipation issue, however none of this seems to have helped > with > > his > > > appetite. we have an app with his new gi and new nutritionist in > > early > > > march and im trying to decide if we can wait that long. getting > > very > > > nervous about his weight, what do you think? > > > Kim concerned mom of Aislynn-10,-6, and Brayden-22mRSS > > > > > >
Guest guest
Kim, I see most people who have responded to your concern about Brayden have agreed that you should not wait until March to do anything. There was one other thing I thought of that could be affecting his appetite and weight gain. Does he have reflux? Even if you think he doesn't, he could have silent reflux, causing him not to want to eat. I have 2 other kids besides (RSS). All 3 of my kids have or have had reflux and all are poor eaters & weigh practically nothing. had bad reflux when he was younger, but had a fundoplication when his g-tube was inserted to stop the reflux. , my non-RSS 5 year old, has silent reflux. He has had this since he was born. He presents no symptoms now other than having vocal nodules (a hoarse voice), but when he was a baby, he had a lot of pain from it & refused to eat sometimes. He still eats practically nothing & weighs only 35 lbs. I also have a 22-month old girl who had severe reflux until just past her first birthday. She doesn't seem to suffer too much anymore, but still doesn't eat so great. She weighs 21.5 lbs., so she is also on the small side for a normal 22-month old. All my kids are on meds for reflux. A GI can prescribe some mild reflux meds such as Zantac to see if it makes a difference in Brayden's appetite before doing extensive testing to see if reflux is part of the culprit. Zantac never helped any of my kids, but it does help some who have reflux. My kids are on stronger meds for reflux - proton pump inhibitors. When you take Brayden to the GI, I'd inquire about the possibility of reflux contributing to his problem. It is very prevalent in many of our RSS kids. Kim C.
