Guest guest
My only advice is to make sure blood counts are monitored regularly, I cannot stress this enough. Not to scare you, but I almost died because of a doctor that did not monitor my blood and ignored the visible warning symptoms. Guest guest
I am on 6-mp, which helped for about a year and a half. I find it MUCH better than steroids. I started having problems again recently and the doctor wanted to up my dose. Instead, I am trying the SCD diet and finding it helps, although I will continue taking my meds right now. (I've only been doing SCD for 3 weeks.) I have virtually no side effects from 6-mp, it's been the best thing for me after the various enemas stopped working. Problem is that it takes between 6 weeks and 6 months to become effective.
Guest guest
I took 6MP for 9 years successfully. It allowed me to taper off of the prednisone. When I started SCD, my blood counts went WAY WAY down and I had to be yanked off of the 6MP. (I assume the change in diet changed the way the drug worked in my body in some way), but I had no problems getting off of it. It was a great drug for me. I had regular bloodwork done and had no problems til the end, and that was fine. Best, Crohn's > > We have been SCD for 16 months, but my little guy is still having problems. Crohns. Guest guest
I was put on 6MP as a way to ween me off of prednisone. It didn't do a bloody thing and I was stuck on it AND prednisone for 11 years! I didn't suffer any side effects. I did have a slight problem with my liver starting to go toxic as they were trying to figure out just the right dose for me (ended up being 1 and 1/4 tab - weird measurement, eh?) so the suggestions to make sure your doc is checking your blood frequently enough is a really good one. I also learned that if I started to have pain just under my right rib cage then I should call the doc or go to the ER b/c it could be my liver going toxic. Oh...AND I found out after being on it for years that it increases your risk of lymphoma! Lialda (time release mesalamine) helped me ween of prednisone but I have UC so I'm not sure if it would be as useful with Chrohn's. I guess it would depends on where the problem area was. Guest guest
Hi , How is your son? I take 6-MP. I was severely ill back in 2000 (I was 29) when I first got sick with CD. I lived in the hospital and had to be fed through a central line for a long time and it was all so scary. Anyway...I was on prednisone, remicaid, 6-MP, etc, etc for a year. I followed the SCD religiously. The SCD and the 6-MP have allowed me to not need the steroids. I know that everyone reacts differently to medications but I can tell you that I am very thankful for the 6-MP. For me, the 6-MP works and it does well with my body (no significant side effects). **give the SCD time too. it sounds like your son has had a tough time. it took a solid year of SCD + pred + 6-MP for my body to heal enough that i could taper off pred. Wishing you the best, CD 2000 6-MP SCD > > We have been SCD for 16 months, but my little guy is still having problems. Crohns.
