Guest guest
Hi all, (I had lefort1, bsso, and genio on 9/27 to correct my overbite) While I hardly got sleep last night, at least I did not panic. When does the swelling peak? Today is my 3rd day after the surgery. My right side is more swollen than the left. I can't yet make my lips meet together. Is that common too? Has anybody had 18mm or so advancement of the lower? my doctor says that a relapse can move it back it by close to 20% (about 4 mm).. is that common? He said that the longer I have the bands, the better my chances to avoid relapse. Thanks, Sriram
Guest guest
Hi Sriram, Congratulation on getting to the other side. I am 18 days post op amd I found day 4-5 for swelling to be my worst, after that started to go down slowly. My right side was also a lot more swollen than my left ans still is. I put it down to the doctor making a mistake and having to cut the bone twice on my right side. I was also scared about the relapse, but as your doctor said, the bands in the right position will stop that from happening. It is very important for the first 6 weeks until the bone fuses, but can happen in the first 6 months after surgery. You are your way to recovery, every day is a new day, so good luck and keep your chin up, it only gets better. Guest guest
Hi, I had my orthognathic surgery in 2002. I had a 17 mm advancement of the lower jaw using distraction and my upper moved back and up 5 mm so a total of 22 mm to correct my overbite. Mine was done in two stages however because of the large movements required and to minimize stress on my joints. I did relapse but it was because my joints deteriorated. I had long plates which went down the length of my mandible to prevent it from moving back. My condyles disintegrated which resulted in an open bite and 8 mm overbite at one point. I've had several surgeries since then finally culminating in bilateral joint replacements on June 29, 2005. Now my bite is nearly perfect again. My swelling did peak around 5-7 days and lasted up to 3 months depending on the surgery. It's not unusual to have one side more swollen than the other. It was weeks before I could easily touch my lips together and even now, 3 months post-op, I have to strain a little to keep my mouth closed. With such a large advancement, it takes a while for the soft tissues to stretch as well. > Hi all, > > (I had lefort1, bsso, and genio on 9/27 to correct my overbite) > While I hardly got sleep last night, at least I did not panic. > > When does the swelling peak? Guest guest
Hi karen, Thanks for sharing the information. You have indeed gone through a lot. Glad to hear that your bite is nearly perfect. Did you get genioplasty too done? Thanks, and best wishes, Sriram _____ From: orthognathicsurgerysupport [mailto:orthognathicsurgerysupport ] On Behalf Of minirascal2002 Sent: Friday, September 30, 2005 5:43 PM To: orthognathicsurgerysupport Subject: Re: Swelling Hi, I had my orthognathic surgery in 2002.
